Numerical analysis of thermally induced optical nonlinearity in GaSe layered crystal

A numerical approach to studying thermally induced optical nonlinearity in semiconductors is presented. A transient finite difference algorithm is applied to solve the thermal diffusion equation coupled with the nonlinear absorbance-transmittance of Au/GaSe/Au samples with an applied electric field. The presented analysis can deal with any arbitrary axisymmetric dependence of the input power over the sample and external electric field, and provides information about the steady state and transitory effects in the transmittance.
Strong vacuum squeezing from bichromatically driven Kerrlike cavities: from optomechanics to superconducting circuits

AbstractSqueezed light, displaying less fluctuation than vacuum in some observable, is key in the flourishing field of quantum technologies. Optical or microwave cavities containing a Kerr nonlinearity are known to potentially yield large levels of squeezing, which have been recently observed in optomechanics and nonlinear superconducting circuit platforms. Such Kerr-cavity squeezing however suffers from two fundamental drawbacks. First, optimal squeezing requires working close to turning points of a bistable cycle, which are highly unstable against noise thus rendering optimal squeezing inaccessible. Phase-bistable patterns and cavity solitons induced by spatially periodic injection into vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

Spatial rocking is a kind of resonant forcing able to convert a self-oscillatory system into a phase-bistable, pattern forming system, whereby the phase of the spatially averaged oscillation field locks to one of two values differing by $\ensuremath{\pi}$. We propose the spatial rocking in an experimentally relevant system---the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL)---and demonstrate its feasibility through analytical and numerical tools applied to a VCSEL model. We show phase bistability, spatial patterns, such as roll patterns, domain walls, and phase (dark-ring) solitons, which could be useful for optical information storage and processing purposes.
Improved time-resolved acousto-optic technique for optical fiber analysis of axial non-uniformities by using edge interrogation

The time-resolved acousto-optic technique demonstrated recently to be a very useful method for the analysis of fiber axial non-uniformities, able to detect variations of fiber diameter in the nanometric scale with a spatial resolution of few cm. An edge interrogation approach is proposed to improve further the performance of this technique. The detection of subnanometer fiber diameter changes or sub-ppm changes of the core refractive index is demonstrated.
