Abstract Background: The molecular regulation of viral latency and reactivation is a central unsolved issue in the understanding of cytomegalovirus (CMV) biology. Like human CMV (hCMV), murine CMV (mCMV) can establish a latent infection in cells of the myeloid lineage. Since mCMV genome remains present in various organs after its clearance from hematopoietic cells first in bone marrow and much later in blood, there must exist one or more widely distributed cell type(s) representing the cellular site(s) of enduring mCMV latency in host tissues. Baculovirus-mediated immediate-early gene expression and nuclear reorganization in human cells

Baculovirus, Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV), has the ability to transduce mammalian cell lines without replication. The general objective of this study was to detect the transcription and expression of viral immediate-early genes in human cells and to examine the interactions between viral components and subnuclear structures. Viral capsids were seen in large, discrete foci in nuclei of both dividing and non-dividing human cells. Concurrently, the transcription of viral immediate-early transregulator genes (ie-1, ie-2) and translation of IE-2 protein were detected. Phenomenological description of the vortex density in rotating BEC superfluids

The close analogy of a purely magnetic excitation scheme, used in the experiments on Bose-Einstein condensate by Hodby et al., and the rotating bucket experiments with liquid helium 4 has suggested us to apply a phenomenological equation for the vortex line density, previously proposed for rotating superfluid helium 4, to describe the vortex density in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate as a function of the angular speed. In both systems, the phenomenological equation provides a reasonable description of the observed data.

Learning to live with unloved others is crucial in the ecological crisis. Unloved wasps are feared and disliked for their sting. Understanding of their ecological importance is increasing, however. Human-wasp encounters are changing with environmental changes, and strategies for multispecies cohabitation are needed. This multispecies study highlights features of wasp biology affecting human-wasp encounters and analyzes how conflicted human-wasp relations could be mitigated.
