A Hypothetical Effect of the Maxwell–Proca Electromagnetic Stresses on Galaxy Rotation Curves

2019

Maxwell–Proca electrodynamics corresponding to finite photon mass causes a substantial change in the Maxwell stress tensor, and under certain circumstances, may cause electromagnetic stresses to act effectively as "negative pressure." This paper describes a model where this negative pressure imitates gravitational pull and may produce forces comparable to gravity and may even become dominant. The effect is associated with random magnetic fields with correlation lengths exceeding the photon Compton wavelength. The stresses act predominantly on the interstellar gas and cause an additional force pulling the gas toward the center and toward the galactic plane. Stars do not experience any signif…

The milliarcsecond-scale radio structure of AB Dor A

2020

Context: The fast rotator, pre-main sequence star AB Dor A is a strong and persistent radio emitter. The extraordinary coronal flaring activity is thought to be the origin of compact radio emission and other associated phenomena as large slingshot prominences. Aim: We aim to investigate the radio emission mechanism and the milliarcsecond radio structure around AB Dor A. Methods: We performed phase-referenced VLBI observations at 22.3 GHz, 8.4 GHz, and 1.4 GHz over more than one decade using the Australian VLBI array. Results: Our 8.4 GHz images show a double core-halo morphology, similar at all epochs, with emission extending at heights between 5 and 18 stellar radii. Furthermore, the seque…

The Gamma Cube: a new way to explore the gamma-ray sky

2015

International audience; We propose a new concept to allow the tracking of electrons in a gamma-ray telescope operating in the 5–100 MeV band. The idea of this experiment is to image the ionizing tracks that charged particles produce in a scintillator. It is a pair creation telescope at high energy and a Compton telescope with electron tracking at low energy. The telescope features a large scintillator transparent to the scintillation light, an ad-hoc optical system and a high resolution and highly sensitive imager. The performance perspectives and the advantages of such a system are outstanding but the technical difficulties are serious. A few years of research and development within the sc…

Simulation of Shock-Shock interaction in parsec-scale jets

2011

The analysis of the radio light curves of the blazar CTA102 during its 2006 flare revealed a possible interaction between a standing shock wave and a traveling one. In order to better understand this highly non-linear process, we used a relativistic hydrodynamic code to simulate the high energy interaction and its related emission. The calculated synchrotron emission from these simulations showed an increase in turnover flux density, $S_{m}$, and turnover frequency, $\nu_{m}$, during the interaction and decrease to its initial values after the passage of the traveling shock wave.

Probing the Internal Structure of Magnetized, Relativistic Jets with Numerical Simulations

2016

From an observational point of view, unveiling the physical processes behind the nature of the jets emanating from radio-loud AGN demands the resolution of the structure across the jet with the highest angular resolutions. Relying on a magneto-fluid dynamical description, numerical simulations can help to characterize the internal structure of jets (transversal structure, magnetic field structure, internal shocks, etc.). In the first part of the paper, we shall discuss equilibrium models of magnetized, relativistic, infinite, axisymmetric jets with rotation propagating through a homogeneous, static, unmagnetized ambient medium. Then, these transversal equilibrium profiles will be used to bu…

A method for computing synchrotron and inverse-Compton emission from hydrodynamic simulations of supernova remnants

2015

Abstract The observational signature of supernova remnants (SNRs) is very complex, in terms of both their geometrical shape and their spectral properties, dominated by non-thermal synchrotron and inverse-Compton scattering. We propose a post-processing method to analyse the broad-band emission of SNRs based on three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations. From the hydrodynamical data, we estimate the distribution of non-thermal electrons accelerated at the shock wave and follow the subsequent evolution as they lose or gain energy by adiabatic expansion or compression and emit energy by radiation. As a first test case, we use a simulation of a bipolar supernova expanding into a cloudy medium…

A large rotating structure around AB Doradus A at VLBI scale

2019

AbstractWe report the results of three VLBI observations of the pre-main-sequence star AB Doradus A at 8.4 GHz. With almost three years between consecutive observations, we found a complex structure at the expected position of this star for all epochs. Maps at epochs 2007 and 2010 show a double core-halo morphology while the 2013 map reveals three emission peaks with separations between 5 and 18 stellar radii. Furthermore, all maps show a clear variation of the source structure within the observing time. We consider a number of hypothesis in order to explain such observations, mainly: magnetic reconnection in loops on the polar cap, a more general loop scenario and a close companion to AB D…

Towards asteroseismology of core-collapse supernovae with gravitational wave observations – II. Inclusion of space–time perturbations

2018

Improvements in ground-based, advanced gravitational wave (GW) detectors may allow in the near future to observe the GW signal of a nearby core-collapse supernova. For the most common type of progenitors, likely with slowly rotating cores, the dominant GW emission mechanisms are the post-bounce oscillations of the proto-neutron star (PNS) before the explosion. We present a new procedure to compute the eigenmodes of the system formed by the PNS and the stalled accretion shock in general relativity including spacetime perturbations. The new method improves on previous results by accounting for perturbations of both the lapse function and the conformal factor. We apply our analysis to two nume…

VLBI-selected sample of Compact Symmetric Object candidates and frequency-dependent position of hotspots

2011

The Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) are small (<1 kiloparsec) and powerful extragalactic radio sources showing emission on both sides of an active galactic nucleus and no signs of strong relativistic beaming. They may be young radio sources, progenitors of large FRII radio galaxies. We aim to study the statistical properties of CSOs by constructing and investigating a new large sample of CSO candidates on the basis of dual-frequency, parsec-scale morphology. For the candidate selection we utilized VLBI data for 4170 extragalactic objects obtained simultaneously at 2.3 and 8.6 GHz (S and X band) within the VLBA Calibrator Survey 1-6 and the Research and Development - VLBA projects. Prope…

Exploring Broadband GRB Behavior During gamma-ray Emission

2007

The robotic ROTSE-III telescope network detected prompt optical emission contemporaneous with the gamma-ray emission of Swift events GRB051109A and GRB051111. Both datasets have continuous coverage at high signal-to-noise levels from the prompt phase onwards, thus the early observations are readily compared to the Swift XRT and BAT high energy detections. In both cases, the optical afterglow is established, declining steadily during the prompt emission. For GRB051111, there is evidence of an excess optical component during the prompt emission. The component is consistent with the flux spectrally extrapolated from the gamma-rays, using the gamma-ray spectral index. A compilation of spectral …
