An eco-physiological and biotechnological approach to conservation of the world-wide rare and endangered aquatic liverwort Riella helicophylla (Bory …
2016
AbstractThe rare aquatic liverwortRiella helicophylla(Bory et Mont.) Mont., inhabitant of temporary shallow ponds around the Mediterranean basin, is considered threatened throughout its distribution range. In addition, little is known of its biology and ecology or of its role in such an important ecosystem where environmental conditions vary yearly in unpredictable ways. In these variable habitats, due to the seasonal fluctuation of water levels, there is no guarantee of yearly spore input into the spore bank. Spore germination rate and the effects of different culture media in an axenic culture establishment, as well as propagation procedures ofR. helicophylla, were tested. New insights int…

A new orthotrichaceous species, Lewinskya transcaucasica Eckstein, Garilleti & F.Lara, is described, based on several samples collected in the Georgian territories of Greater Caucasus and Lesser Ca...
Evaluating field-scale sampling methods for the estimation of mean plant densities of weeds
2000
The weed flora (comprising seven species) of a field continuously grown with soyabean was simulated for 4 years, using semivariograms established from previous field observations. Various sampling methods were applied and compared for accurately estimating mean plant densities, for differing weed species and years. The tested methods were based on (a) random selection wherein samples were chosen either entirely randomly, randomly with at least 10 or 20 m between samples, or randomly after stratifying the field; (b) systematic selection where samples were placed along diagonals or along zig-zagged lines across the field; (c) predicted Setaria viridis (L.) P. Beaux seedling maps which were us…
First record of Tamarix macrocarpa (Tamaricaceae) for Europe
2017
AbstractTamarix macrocarpa, a species with distribution in Central and North Africa, in the countries bordering the Persian Gulf and in Central and western Asia is recorded for the first time for Europe. Pentamerous flowers and androecium diplostemonous characterize this small tree.
A conspectus of the genus Cherleria (Minuartia s.l., Caryophyllaceae)
2017
Abstract: Minuartia s.l. (Caryophyllaceae) is polyphyletic, with its species belonging to eleven major clades, all of which have been recognized at the generic rank. Cherleria is one of these segregate genera, based on the Linnaean species Cherleria sedoides. Its centre of diversity is on the Balkan Peninsula, but species also occur in the European and North American high mountains and in the Arctic. The species of Cherleria show ecological, especially substrate, differentiation and multiple colonisations of alpine habitats. We make new combinations for the 17 (of 20) taxa in Cherleria that do not yet have Cherleria names and provide a key to all species of the genus. Citation: Moore A. J. …
Typifications of the Linnaean name Equisetum hyemale and E. ×moorei (Equisetaceae)
2017
The lectotypes of the names Equisetum hyemale Linnaeus (1753: 1062) and E. ×moorei Newman (1854: 19) (Equisetaceae) are designated. Previously, a neotype for E. hyemale was selected by Hauke in 1962 from a specimen kept at LINN. However, this typification is rejected since there are two original elements that may contribute to a correct lectotypification of the name. Therefore this choice is ineffective and should be rejected. An illustration from Mattioli (1586) is designated as the lectotype. On the other hand, in order to avoid any ambiguity in the interpretation of the lectotype, an epitype is also selected. A lectotype for E. ×moorei, the putative hybrid between E. hyemale and E. ramos…

Species composition modulates seedling competitiveness of temperate tree species under hemiboreal conditions
2020
Abstract Mixed stands are advised for reduction of impacts of natural hazards, and species composition can largely affect sustainability and productivity of the stands. Early development of a stands after a stand-replacing disturbance can have considerable legacy effects on growth via alterations in the diversity-productivity relationships. Accordingly compatibility of growth and competitiveness of different species is one of the key issues for susceptibility of mixed stands. A two-year chamber experiment was conducted to assess early growth and intra- and inter-specific competition for light and soil resources among the seedlings of temperate tree species simulating the predicted effect of…

2018
Limonium ilergabonum (Plumbaginaceae), a new species from northeastern Iberian Peninsula
2017
A new species of Limonium (Plumbaginaceae), L . ilergabonum sp. nov. , is described from the inland gypsum soils of the northeastern Iberian Peninsula (Flix, Tarragona province, Spain). The new species is closely related to the Iberian L. hibericum on morphological traits as assessed by multivariate ordination analysis (PCA), but it can be distinguished by the narrower leaves, inflorescence shape, and longer calyx. Limonium ilergabonum shows mixoploidy (2 n = 18, 2 n = 27), irregular pollen shapes, low levels of pollen stainability, and a single pollen-stigma combination morph (B type). All evidences suggest that L . ilergabonum is a polyploid relict species with an apomictic breeding syste…
