The 1-way on-line coupled atmospheric chemistry model system MECO(n) – Part 2: On-line coupling with the Multi-Model-Driver (MMD)

2012

A new, highly flexible model system for the seamless dynamical down-scaling of meteorological and chemical processes from the global to the meso-γ scale is presented. A global model and a cascade of an arbitrary number of limited-area model instances run concurrently in the same parallel environment, in which the coarser grained instances provide the boundary data for the finer grained instances. Thus, disk-space intensive and time consuming intermediate and pre-processing steps are entirely avoided and the time interpolation errors of common off-line nesting approaches are minimised. More specifically, the regional model COSMO of the German Weather Service (DWD) is nested on-line into the …

Multi-objective optimization for computation offloading in mobile-edge computing

2017

Mobile-edge cloud computing is a new cloud platform to provide pervasive and agile computation augmenting services for mobile devices (MDs) at anytime and anywhere by endowing ubiquitous radio access networks with computing capabilities. Although offloading computations to the cloud can reduce energy consumption at the MDs, it may also incur a larger execution delay. Usually the MDs have to pay cloud resource they used. In this paper, we utilize queuing theory to bring a thorough study on the energy consumption, execution delay and price cost of offloading process in a mobile-edge cloud system. Specifically, both wireless transmission and computing capabilities are explicitly and jointly co…

FPGA-based Acceleration of Detecting Statistical Epistasis in GWAS

2014

Abstract Genotype-by-genotype interactions (epistasis) are believed to be a significant source of unexplained genetic variation causing complex chronic diseases but have been ignored in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) due to the computational burden of analysis. In this work we show how to benefit from FPGA technology for highly parallel creation of contingency tables in a systolic chain with a subsequent statistical test. We present the implementation for the FPGA-based hardware platform RIVYERA S6-LX150 containing 128 Xilinx Spartan6-LX150 FPGAs. For performance evaluation we compare against the method iLOCi[9]. iLOCi claims to outperform other available tools in terms of accuracy.…

Theoretical Game Approach for Mobile Users Resource Management in a Vehicular Fog Computing Environment

2018

Vehicular Cloud Computing (VCC) is envisioned as a promising approach to increase computation capabilities of vehicle devices for emerging resource-hungry mobile applications. In this paper, we introduce the new concept of Vehicular Fog Computing (VFC). The Fog Computing (FC) paradigm evolved and is employed to enhance the quality of cloud computing services by extending it to the edge of the network using one or more collaborative end-user clients or near-user edge devices. The VFC is similar to the VCC concept but uses vehicles resources located at the edge of the network in order to serve only local on-demand mobile applications. The aim of this paper is to resolve the problem of admissi…

Elements of Sustainability for Public Sector Software : Mosaic Enterprise Architecture, Macroservices, and Low-Code

2021

Public sector is a large consumer for software. In countries such as Finland, many of the systems are made to order by consultancy companies that participate in public tenders. These tenders initiated by the state, cities, and other public sector organizations. Furthermore, as public sector tasks are often decomposed to various actors, each and every one of them makes their purchase based on their own needs. In this paper, we argue that to maintain software sustainability in this context, there is a need for three key elements. Firstly, there is a need for an enterprise architecture where independent services from various vendors are can be easily deployed and integrated. Secondly, these se…
