Unwanted effects of European Union environmental policy to promote a post-carbon industry. The case of energy in the European ceramic tile sector

2016

Global warming combined with low carbon transition plans is threatening the future of high energy consumption industry sectors in the European Union (EU). The need to respond to environmental challenges is demonstrated by support for international level energy policies and legal requirements, such as the Kyoto Protocol which the EU supports, and increased EU-level environmental legislation and energy policies. The effect of these initiatives is gradually transforming industrial activities in the EU. However, since not all countries have adopted these policies, evaluation of their net effect needs to take account also of side-effects such as delocalization of industry activity and the legal …

Assessment of Cost and Energy Requirements of Electron Beam Melting (EBM) and Machining Processes

2017

Additive Manufacturing is under the spotlight as potential disruptive technology, particularly for the production of complex-shaped structural metallic components. However, the actual AM process capabilities present some limitations in achieving the strict part quality requirements imposed by the aerospace and automotive sectors. Therefore, the integration of AM and conventional manufacturing represents an emerging scenario to be investigated. In this paper, a pure machining process and a hybrid production route (based on EBM and finish machining) are compared. The influence of material usage-related factors on costs and energy demand is discussed. The results prove that, despite precise pr…

Energy and CO2 life cycle inventory issues for aluminum based components: The case study of a high speed train window panel

2016

Abstract As materials production and transport are two relevant sectors in terms of global environmental impact, over the last years environmental impact analyses (mainly life cycle based analyses) of material replacing strategies in means of transportation were developed. Life cycle approach allows to consider the light-weighing benefit without neglecting the environmental impact of material production. In the present research energy and CO2 emissions life cycle analysis of a real case study is presented. Industrial data, experimental measurements and literature analysis were used to develop the life cycle analysis of an aluminum window panel to be assembled on an Italian high speed train.…

Guarding, guiding, gate opening: Prison officer work in a Norwegian welfare context

2017

Anne A is a prison officer, and for years, she has been working behind the walls—in low-security and high-security wings, with remand and sentenced prisoners. She says: We are there fifty per cent in order to keep an eye on them, to ensure that they stay here [in prison]. The other fifty per cent we are trying to help them. They may be drug users or have other problems, and it’s just as much our duty to help them as to watch them. And when we help, this contributes to security just as much as a locked door or an alarm.

Lean university: applying the ECRS method to improve an administrative process

2019

This paper presents a case study for an improvement method applied in “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, Romania. The ECRS method has its roots in manufacturing, specifically in improvement processes. The novelty lies in applying this method in Higher Education. Considering the existing know-how in process improvements of the human resource from the University and the importance of quality in the organisation’s performance, this paper sought to focus on using one of the most important principles of lean manufacturing in the administrative sector. An observation form was designed in order to analyse the process and by using the ECRS method and brainstorming for ideas with key stakeholders, …

Valuing public acceptance of alternative-fuel buses using a Latent Class Tobit model: A case study in Valencia

2020

Abstract The introduction of hybrid electric technology for urban public transportation can be considered a valuable stepping stone to low-carbon mobility. Using the contingent valuation method, a sample of 427 respondents were asked about their willingness to pay for the air pollution reductions associated to a scenario of gradual introduction of hybrid electric buses in Valencia, Spain. Results show that 67% of the respondents are willing to pay extra for the adoption of this electric hybrid technology, being the mean willingness to pay € 0.33 per single bus fare. This would imply a 22% hypothetical increase in current bus fares and shows that public acceptance is critical for the success…

Disrupting resilient criminal networks through data analysis: The case of Sicilian Mafia

2020

Compared to other types of social networks, criminal networks present hard challenges, due to their strong resilience to disruption, which poses severe hurdles to law-enforcement agencies. Herein, we borrow methods and tools from Social Network Analysis to (i) unveil the structure of Sicilian Mafia gangs, based on two real-world datasets, and (ii) gain insights as to how to efficiently disrupt them. Mafia networks have peculiar features, due to the links distribution and strength, which makes them very different from other social networks, and extremely robust to exogenous perturbations. Analysts are also faced with the difficulty in collecting reliable datasets that accurately describe the…

AnMBR, reclaimed water and fertigation: Two case studies in Italy and Spain to assess economic and technological feasibility and CO2 emissions within…

2020

[EN] The use of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology on urban wastewater can help to alleviate droughts, by reusing the water and nutrients embedded in the effluent in agriculture (fertigation) in line with Circular Economy principles. The combination of AnMBR and fertigation reduces CO2 emissions due to the organic matter valorization and the partial avoidance of mineral fertilizer requirements. However, both AnMBR and fertigation still face technological and regulatory barriers that need to be overcome. These bottlenecks were tackled within the first Innovation Deal approved by the European Commission in 2016, and gave rise to several case studies on water reuse systems. The r…
