An investigation into the fracture behaviour of honeycombs with density gradients

2020

International audience; In this study we perform an experimental and computational investigation about the fracture behaviour of polymer honeycombs presenting gradients in terms of lattice density. Such lattice relative density variations are introduced with the aim of mimicking the micro-morphology encountered in some natural materials, such as several kinds of woods, which seems related to the ability of the corresponding macro-material to delay the propagation of fracture under certain conditions. Starting from the conclusions of previous computational analyses, we perform a few experimental tensile tests on ABS model honeycombs obtained by additive manufacturing, with the aim of getting…

Optimization of a laser ion source for $^{163}$Ho isotope separation

2019

To measure the mass of the electron neutrino, the “Electron Capture in Holmium-163” (ECHo) collaboration aims at calorimetrically measuring the spectrum following electron capture in 163Ho. The success of the ECHo experiment depends critically on the radiochemical purity of the 163Ho sample, which is ion-implanted into the calorimeters. For this, a 30 kV high transmission magnetic mass separator equipped with a resonance ionization laser ion source is used. To meet the ECHo requirements, the ion source unit was optimized with respect to its thermal characteristics and material composition by means of the finite element method thermal-electric calculations and chemical equilibrium simulation…

Quartz resonators for penning traps toward mass spectrometry on the heaviest ions

2020

We report on cyclotron frequency measurements on trapped 206,207Pb+ ions by means of the non-destructive Fourier-transform ion-cyclotron-resonance technique at room temperature. In a proof-of-principle experiment using a quartz crystal instead of a coil as a resonator, we have alternately carried out cyclotron frequency measurements for 206Pb+ and 207Pb+ with the sideband coupling method to obtain 21 cyclotron-frequency ratios with a statistical uncertainty of 6 × 10−7. The mean frequency ratio R¯ deviates by about 2σ from the value deduced from the masses reported in the latest Atomic Mass Evaluation. We anticipate that this shift is due to the ion–ion interaction between the simultaneousl…

XUV diagnostic to monitor H-like emission from B, C, N, and O for the W7-X stellarator

2019

The “C/O Monitor” system for the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator is a dedicated spectrometer with high throughput and high time resolution (order of 1 ms) for fast monitoring of content of low-Z impurities in the plasma. The observed spectral lines are fixed to Lyman-α lines of H-like atoms of carbon (3.4 nm), oxygen (1.9 nm), nitrogen (2.5 nm), and boron (4.9 nm). The quality of the wall condition will be monitored by the measurements of oxygen being released from the walls during the experiments. The strong presence of carbon is an indication for enhanced plasma-wall interaction or overload of plasma facing components. The presence of nitrogen (together with oxygen) may indicate a poss…

Choice of the detectors for light impurities plasma studies at W7-X using ‘CO Monitor’ system

2019

Abstarct The ‘CO Monitor’ is a new spectrometer system dedicated for the continuous measurements of line intensities of carbon, oxygen, boron and nitrogen at the fusion plasma experiment Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X). Its main purpose is to deliver constant information about indicated elements with high time resolution (better than 1 ms), but low spatial resolution since the line shapes are not going to be investigated. The system consists of four independent channels, each equipped with dispersive element dedicated for measurement of selected line of interest. In order to perform the highest efficiency of the ‘CO Monitor’ system, it is essential to choose the proper detector type for this task. T…

Correlations between density distributions, optical spectra, and ion species in a hydrogen plasma (invited)

2016

An experimental study of plasma distributions in a 2.45 GHz hydrogen discharge operated at 100 Hz repetition rate is presented. Ultrafast photography, time integrated visible light emission spectra, time resolved Balmer-alpha emission, time resolved Fulcher Band emission, ion species mass spectra, and time resolved ion species fraction measurements have been implemented as diagnostic tools in a broad range of plasma conditions. Results of plasma distributions and optical emissions correlated with H + , H + 2 , and H + 3 ion currents by using a Wien filter system with optical observation capability are reported. The magnetic field distribution and strength is found as the most critical facto…

Plasma instabilities of a charge breeder ECRIS

2017

International audience; Experimental observation of plasma instabilities in a charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source (CB-ECRIS) is reported. It is demonstrated that the injection of 133Cs+ or 85Rb+ ion beam into the oxygen discharge of the CB-ECRIS can trigger electron cyclotron instabilities, which restricts the parameter space available for the optimization of the charge breeding efficiency. It is concluded that the transition from a stable to unstable plasma regime is caused by gradual accumulation and ionization of Cs/Rb and simultaneous change of the discharge parameters in 10–100 ms time scale, not by a prompt interaction between the incident ion beam and the ECRIS pla…

The role of seed electrons on the plasma breakdown and preglow of electron cyclotron resonance ion source

2009

The 14 GHz Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source at University of Jyväskylä, Department of Physics (JYFL) has been operated in pulsed mode in order to study the plasma breakdown and preglow effect. It was observed that the plasma breakdown time and preglow characteristics are affected by seed electrons provided by a continuous low power microwave signal at secondary frequency. Sustaining low density plasma during the off-period of high power microwave pulses at the primary frequency shifts the charge state distribution of the preglow transient toward higher charge states. This could be exploited for applications requiring fast and efficient ionization of radioactive elements as proposed f…

A new Collinear Apparatus for Laser Spectroscopy and Applied Science (COALA).

2020

We present a new collinear laser spectroscopy setup that has been designed to overcome systematic uncertainty limits arising from high-voltage and frequency measurements, beam superposition, and collisions with residual gas that are present in other installations utilizing this technique. The applied methods and experimental realizations are described, including an active stabilization of the ion-source potential, new types of ion sources that have not been used for collinear laser spectroscopy so far, dedicated installations for pump-and-probe measurements, and a versatile laser system referenced to a frequency comb. The advanced setup enables us to routinely determine transition frequenci…

Spectroscopic study of ion temperature in minimum-B ECRIS plasma

2019

Experimentally determined ion temperatures of different charge states and elements in minimum-B confined electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) plasma are reported. It is demonstrated with optical emission spectroscopy, complemented by the energy spread measurements of the extracted ion beams, that the ion temperature in the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS is 5–28 eV depending on the plasma species and charge state. The reported ion temperatures are an order of magnitude higher than previously deduced from indirect diagnostics and used in simulations, but agree with those reported for a quadrupole mirror fusion experiment. The diagnostics setup and data interpretation are discussed in detail to …
