The research investigated whether a bilinguals’ second language (L2) is activated during a task involving only the first language (L1). We tested the hypothesis that the amount of L2 interference can vary across settings, with less interference occurring in testing locations where L2 is rarely used. In Experiment 1, we compared language processing for 50 Arabic–English bilinguals tested in Saudi Arabia and 49 Arabic–English tested in the United States. International audience; This study uses the case of an oncological paediatric service to discuss sensemaking and discourse ethics in the context of caregiving, building ethical competence to provide the best care possible to children. The patients and their families live in paediatric care, some for several years. At length, an intense relationship may develop between the medical staff and patients' family members, albeit at times a difficult relationship. Still, interviews conducted indicated that when caregivers provided the best care possible to these patients, even in this harsh environment, an ethics of sensitivity made a positive difference both for the patients and the medical staff.…

This study applied the functional theory of political campaign discourse, developed for political campaigns in the United States to two televised presidential debates in the 2012 presidential elections in Finland. Acclaims were the most preferred statement by the candidates, with agreements being the least preferred. Policy was discussed more than character during the debates. Immediacy and distance in teacher talk—A comparative case study in German elementary- and outdoor school-teaching

This case study examines authentic speech acts by a German primary school teacher in the classroom context and the outdoor learning location of a forest. The study will compare the degree of linguistic immediacy or distance in these two contexts, respectively. Once a week, the class is doing “outdoor school” [Draußenschule] in places of natural or cultural interest near to their school.
