In this study we present evidence of braided plant fibres and basketry imprints on clay recovered from Coves de Santa Maira, a Palaeolithic-Mesolithic cave site located in the Mediterranean region of Spain. The anatomical features of these organic fibre remains were identified in the archaeological material and compared with modern Stipa tenacissima (esparto grass). Based on direct dating, the fragments of esparto cord from our site are the oldest worked plant fibres in Europe. Sixty fragments of fired clay are described. Ammonia removal during leach-bed acidification leads to optimized organic acid production from chicken manure

This work demonstrates the suitability of nitrogen removal during anaerobic acidification in batch configuration for a more efficient pre-treatment of chicken manure prior to anaerobic digestion. High loading rates corresponding to a total nitrogen input between 6.3 and 9.5 g L−1 allowed successful suppression of methanogenic archaea. To eliminate nitrogen, NH3-stripping and MAP (magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate) precipitation were compared. In spite of decreased cell quantities detected using qPCR, removal of nitrogen caused an increase in volatile fatty acid (VFA) formation from 13 to 19%. New insigths relating to the beginning of the Neolithic in the eastern Spain: Evaluating empirical data and modelled predictions

Abstract In this paper we present recent research concerning the neolithization process in the East of Spain, evaluating the time span between the last hunther-gatherer groups and the first farmers ( c . 5950–5150 cal. BC). To do that we have compiled and filtered current information about radiocarbon dates and sites in order to discuss the state of the art relating to the models used to explain the Neolithic spread in the region. Environment and subsistence strategies at La Viña rock shelter and Llonin cave (Asturias, Spain) during MIS3

The sites of La Viña and Llonin have an important archaeological sequence corresponding to Marine Isotope Stage 3: Mousterian, Aurignacian and Gravettian periods. La Viña is a complex rock shelter with continuous occupations, being some (basically the Mousterian and the Aurignacian in contact levels) altered by post-depositional processes as a consequence of the irregular bedrock morphology and the type of processes involved. The cave of Llonin mainly consists of occasional human/carnivores occupations during the Mousterian and the Gravettian. Diachronic variation in the Middle Paleolithic settlement of Abrigo de la Quebrada (Chelva, Spain)

Abstract This paper compares levels IV and VIII of Abrigo de la Quebrada. The study includes knapping technique, raw material, fauna, and the spatial distribution of lithic and bone remains. Although both levels correspond to cumulative palimpsests, patterns of resource management and use of space that suggest changes in the rhythm of occupation and the functionality of the settlements can be discerned. A change in mobility patterns probably underpins the differences between these two levels of Quebrada, but assessing this hypothesis is made difficult by the lack of comparable documentation for other sites in the region.

Morphometry of Middle Bronze Age palstaves by discrete cosine transform.

9 pages; International audience; The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is a Fourier-related transform widely used in signal processing and well suited to the analysis of open outlines. This method was applied here to evaluate the discrimination power of the inner lateral rib for two palstave populations dating from the Middle Bronze Age, excavated in northwest France. A corpus of almost 400 palstaves (bronze axes) of the Breton and Norman types was processed, and compared to specimens found at Sermizelles in Burgundy. In the south-east of France, the first Bell Beaker expansion is manifested by the presence of isolated ceramics but also by a series of settlements established in contact with the indigenous populations. Analysis of the assemblages, their composition and their distribution makes it possible to propose a model of the appearance and development of the Bell Beaker phenomenon but also the probable origin of the elements present in this area.

Analysis of Roman and other archaeological glasses by 12 MeV proton activation analysis

Abstract 14 elements were determined, at trace level, in Roman and other archaeological glasses by 12 MeV proton activation analysis. The results show that the natural glass from Mongolia and Brazilian quartz are the purest of all the samples analysed with detection limits at 1 ppm level for Ti, V, Cr, As, Sr, Y and Zr. In several cut pieces of one variety of Roman glass, using the concentration of Ca, Ti, Fe, Sr and Sb as markers, the homogeneity of glass production and their potential use in provenance studies were discussed.

Abstract The "Bell Beaker " complex should not be globally perceived, because it seems to include several different entities, as shown by its variations in space and time. A regional approach, in south-eastern France, outlines the existence of a first " Bell Beaker Phenomenon " and its spread in Late Neolithic societies. This relatively marginal phenomenon quickly becomes an actual independent "Bell Beaker Culture ", with different geographical fades. These may have been in contact with surviving local cultures.
