Insensitivity of Tree-Ring Growth to Temperature and Precipitation Sharpens the Puzzle of Enhanced Pre-Eruption NDVI on Mt. Etna (Italy)

2017

On Mt. Etna (Italy), an enhanced Normalized Difference in Vegetation Index (NDVI) signature was detected in the summers of 2001 and 2002 along a distinct line where, in November 2002, a flank eruption subsequently occurred. These observations suggest that pre-eruptive volcanic activity may have enhanced photosynthesis along the future eruptive fissure. If a direct relation between NDVI and future volcanic eruptions could be established, it would provide a straightforward and low-cost method for early detection of upcoming eruptions. However, it is unclear if, or to what extent, the observed enhancement of NDVI can be attributed to volcanic activity prior to the subsequent eruption. We conse…

Meta-analysis and imputation refines the association of 15q25 with smoking quantity.

2010

Smoking is a leading global cause of disease and mortality(1). We established the Oxford-GlaxoSmithKline study (Ox-GSK) to perform a genome-wide meta-analysis of SNP association with smoking-related behavioral traits. Our final data set included 41,150 individuals drawn from 20 disease, population and control cohorts. Our analysis confirmed an effect on smoking quantity at a locus on 15q25 (P = 9.45 x 10(-19)) that includes CHRNA5, CHRNA3 and CHRNB4, three genes encoding neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits. We used data from the 1000 Genomes project to investigate the region using imputation, which allowed for analysis of virtually all common SNPs in the region and offered a …

Population genetic analysis of bi-allelic structural variants from low-coverage sequence data with an expectation-maximization algorithm

2014

Background Population genetics and association studies usually rely on a set of known variable sites that are then genotyped in subsequent samples, because it is easier to genotype than to discover the variation. This is also true for structural variation detected from sequence data. However, the genotypes at known variable sites can only be inferred with uncertainty from low coverage data. Thus, statistical approaches that infer genotype likelihoods, test hypotheses, and estimate population parameters without requiring accurate genotypes are becoming popular. Unfortunately, the current implementations of these methods are intended to analyse only single nucleotide and short indel variation…

Will women soon outperform men in open-water ultra-distance swimming in the ‘Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli’?

2014

Abstract This study investigated the change in sex differences across years in ultra-distance swimming performances at the 36-km ‘Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli’ race held from 1954 to 2013. Changes in swimming performance of 662 men and 228 women over the 59-year period were investigated using linear, non-linear and hierarchical regression analyses. Race times of the annual fastest swimmers decreased linearly for women from 731 min to 391 min (r 2  = 0.60, p < 0.0001) and for men from 600 min to 373 min (r 2  = 0.30, p < 0.0001). Race times of the annual top three swimmers decreased linearly between 1963 and 2013 for women from 736.8 ± 78.4 min to 396.6 ± 4.5 min (r 2  = 0.58, p &lt…

Comment on "Lethally hot temperatures during the Early Triassic greenhouse".

2013

Sun et al . (Reports, 19 October 2012, p. 366) reconstructed Permian to Middle Triassic equatorial seawater temperatures. After correct temporal positioning of their data points, their presumed trends of temperature changes, and hence their assumption of a one-to-one relationship between putative "lethally hot" seawater temperatures and a disputable equatorial "eclipse" of some organisms, are no longer supported by their data.

Measurement issues on harmonic analysis according to the IEC 61000-4-7

2022

The objective of this article is an analysis of measurement issues related to the implementation of digital signal processing techniques for harmonic analysis, by means of FFT algorithm with different interpolation algorithms (linear, quadratic and cubic) and different sampling rates. A comparative analysis is made on errors on harmonics measurement obtained in the various case study analyses. Such errors are compared with the IEC 61000-4-7 limits. The study is supported by both simulation and experimental tests; these last are performed with different acquisition boards for signals acquisition.

Applications of integrand reduction to two-loop five-point scattering amplitudes in QCD

2018

We review the current state-of-the-art in integrand level reduction for five-point scattering amplitudes at two loops in QCD. We present some benchmark results for the evaluation of the leading colour two-loop five-gluon amplitudes in the physical region as well as the partonic channels for two quarks and three gluons and four quarks and one gluon.

Line mixing in the ν1 and 2ν2 isotropic Raman Q-branch of CO2 perturbed by argon and helium

1999

0021-9606; The shapes of the ν1 and 2ν2 isotropic Raman Q-branch of CO2 perturbed by argon and helium have been measured by Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy (SRS) or coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) techniques. The data have been successfully analyzed with an energy corrected sudden (ECS) approximation model based on basic rates determined independently. Finally comparison of the present data with time resolved double resonance experiments allows us to discuss the physical origin of the two empirical constants which account for the shift and broadening of the branch due to vibrational effects. L'ASSURANCE DU RAPPORT DE DURABILITÉ EN ESPAGNE ET AMÉRIQUE LATINE

2015
