Evaluation of the fracture performance of different rubberised bitumens based on the essential work of fracture

2017

The fracture performance of rubberised bitumen in addition to one pre-treated with a Warm Mix Additive (Sasobit®) was investigated using different test methods measuring different damage mechanisms. Two Recycled Tyre Rubber (RTR) modifiers together with two base binders were blended in the laboratory to produce various combinations of Recycled Tyre Rubber Modified Bitumens (RTR-MBs). The first RTR is a standard recycled polymer derived from discarded truck and passenger car tyres by ambient grinding. The second RTR consists of 100% recycled truck tyres derived by cryogenic grinding and pre-treated with special oil and WMA to allow further decrease of asphalt mixture production temperatures.…

Stress field model for strengthening of shear-flexure critical RC beams

2017

A model for the design of shear-flexure critical reinforced concrete elements strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets and plates is presented. The model is based on the stress field approach and the equilibrium method and accounts for the different failure modes of FRP, focusing on the debonding of the FRP from the concrete surface. The efficiency of the model in the strength assessment of beams reinforced with FRP by the prediction of the shear-flexure capacity is checked by corroborating the results of several experimental tests found in the literature. Moreover, the presented model's capacity to reproduce experimental behavior is compared with the formulations suggested b…

Shear Capacity Model with Variable Orientation of Concrete Stress Field for RC Beams Strengthened by FRP with Different Inclinations

2021

A design-oriented analytical model able to evaluate the shear capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets or strips oriented in any direction is proposed. The formulation of the model is based on the variable-inclination stress-field approach, aiming to extend the provisions of current European standards to beams strengthened in shear using FRP. The main novelty of the model lies in taking into account the possible different inclination of steel stirrup and FRP reinforcement in determining the orientation of a compressed concrete stress field, and in shear strength evaluation, overcoming the approximation of the known models with variab…

Mechanical and Basic Physical Properties of High-Strength Concrete Exposed to Elevated Temperatures

2018

In this paper, the effect of elevated temperatures on the mechanical and basic properties of two different newly-designed high-strength concretes is studied. The studied materials were prepared from Portland cement, steel fibers, reactive finely milled quartz powder and quartz sand, silica fume, plasticizer, and with a relatively low water/cement ratio of 0.24. The samples were stored in water environment for the first 28 days of hydration to achieve better mechanical properties. Then, after pre-drying at 105 °C to constant mass, the materials were exposed to elevated temperatures of 600 °C and 1000 °C where they were kept for 2 hours. The basic physical properties, such as matrix density, …

Laboratory and in-situ tests for estimating improvements in asphalt concrete with the addition of an LDPE and EVA polymeric compound

2019

Abstract Pavement deformation is a critical issue in the design of pavement structures and the related mixture. Asphalt concretes may be very sensitive to this problem, in compliance with the viscoelastic behaviour of the adopted bitumen. To improve the material performance, many attempts have been made to introduce in the mixture other materials as “modifiers” or “additives” for increasing the permanent deformation resistance and the elastic modulus of the material. Among the different possible materials, polymers determined significant improvements in the road pavement performance. In this paper, the authors tested the adoption of a specifically engineered polymeric compound, in order to …

Moisture Effects on Patch Bonded Composite Repairs

2016

The present work investigated the effects of moisture absorption on the residual tensile strength of unnotched, notched and double-patch repaired carbon/epoxy composites. Patches were bonded to the parent plate using Araldite2015 adhesive. Specimens were aged in demineralised water at 70°C and tested at moisture content of 0% (dry), 3%, 6% and 7%. Results showed that upon ageing, a maximum of 11% and 17% of strength reduction was found in unnotched and repaired specimens, respectively. On the contrary, a maximum of 15% increment in strength was observed in notched specimens. In addition, good fits to the experimental data were found using the proposed residual strength model, with the maxim…

Influence of short-term aging on mechanical properties and morphology of polymer-modified bitumen with recycled plastics from waste materials

2020

Polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) is bitumen that has been specifically engineered with polymer for providing enhanced performance in service. The aging of bitumen is a main aspect that is able to affect its final performance: during the production phase in a hot mix plant, all the binders experience short-term aging due to the high processing temperature. The same is true during the production of the modified binder, when the polymer is dispersed at high temperature in the bitumen mass. This paper aims at studying the effect of short-term aging when using different types of modifiers such as recycled polymers obtained from waste materials. A 50/70 penetration-grade bitumen has been modified, …

A simple interpretation of the effect of the polymer type on the properties of PMBs for road paving applications

2018

Abstract The paper presents the results of the rheological characterisation of polymer-modified bitumen for paving applications. In order to find a simple interpretation of the influence of polymer type on the blends produced, in this study high density and low density polyethylene (PE) with different chemical properties were used, as well as ethylene-vinyl acetate. The chemical characteristics of the base bitumen and the polymers used were determined by means of SARA analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, FTIR, respectively. The morphology of the produced blends was investigated by means of fluorescent light optic microscopy, while the mechanical properties were investigated…
