Towards General Purpose Object Detection: Deep Dense Grid Based Object Detection

2020

Object detection is one of the most challenging and very important branch of computer vision. Some of the challenging aspect of a detection network is the fact that an object can appear anywhere in the image, be partially occluded by another object, might appear in crowd or have greatly varying scales. Consequently, we propose a fine grained and equally spaced dense grid cells throughout an input image be responsible of detecting an object. We re-purpose an already existing deep state-of-the-art detector or classifier into deep and dense detector. Our dense object detector uses binary class encoding and hence suitable for very large multi-class object detector. We also propose a more flexib…

The benefits of inclusive education: new challenges for university teachers

2017

Inclusive education is a child’s right, not a privilege. The amount of current attention given to children and to childhood is unprecedented. In a world affected by financial crises, attitudes about children’s needs are very important. Recent years have seen innovations in the focus of research, as political moves that challenge the ways different children have been excluded and silenced. Inclusive education is a real and urgent need for all educational systems around the world. Inside our university, the Teachers Training Department needs to take serious measures to create a professional environment for all the students involved in the initial training for becoming teachers at all levels. …

Reuse of electric vehicle batteries in buildings: An integrated load match analysis and life cycle assessment approach

2019

Abstract The increasing use of renewable energy technologies for electricity generation in buildings will require a growing number of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to enhance the reliability of electricity supply. The increasing number of retired electric vehicle (EV) batteries, expected from the automotive sector, can match this demand as EV batteries can be used as BESS, considering that they have about 80% of their original energy capacity. In this context, the study aims at examining the system, consisting of a BESS made by retired Li-ion EV batteries, a photovoltaic plant (20 kW) and the electricity grid, that provides the electricity required by an existing nearly net zero res…

The Geometry of a Domed Architecture: A Stately Example of Kārbandi at Bagh-e Dolat Abad in Yazd

2016

This paper analyses the kārbandi of the Hashti pavilion at Bagh-e-Dolat Abad in Yazd. Kārbandi is a spatial system obtained through the projection of a star-shaped drawing onto a curved surface. It is characterised by a complex use of geometry and repetitive symmetry. The analysis of its geometrical aspects contributes to an understanding of the traditional rules underlying the original design. The kārbandi of the octagonal vestibule of the Hashti pavilion consists of a complex roof system that completes the octagonal volume of the room below; its intrados presents a pattern of interlocking ribbed arches. The paper also looks at the drawings, module and proportions of the Hashti pavilion, w…

Microstructure and rheological response of laboratory-aged SBS-modified bitumens

2019

Polymer additives are widely used to improve the performance of road bitumens including their resistance to hardening during oxidation, although their oxidative inhibitor effect has not been well documented. This study aims to investigate the effect of laboratory-simulated ageing on the microstructure, and rheological properties of Polymer Modified Bitumens (PMBs) prepared with a Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) copolymer and sulphur as a cross-linker. The laboratory ageing was conducted through the Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) and the Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) procedures. The unaged and aged binders were characterised using the Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery (MSCR) test, Gel Permeati…

Rubberised bitumen manufacturing assisted by rheological measurements

2015

This paper investigates the effect of processing temperature and time on the rheological proper- ties of recycled tyre rubber-modified bitumens (RTR-MBs) produced using two different base binders and an ambient ground crumb rubber modifier (CRM). The production of the RTR- MBs was accomplished by means of a standard Brookfield rotational viscometer together with a modified impeller, dual helical impeller, to allow mixing as well as real-time viscosity measurements of the produced RTR-MBs. The rheological properties of the final RTR-MBs were determined by means of standard dynamic mechanical analysis oscillatory and multiple stress creep recovery testing using a dynamic shear rheometer. The …

Bio-based rigid high-density polyurethane foams as a structural thermal break material

2020

Abstract Sustainable development of building industry implies increasing usage of green materials. With this aim and for the intended application as a structural thermal break material, rigid high-density polyurethane foams have been manufactured using polyols derived from renewable resources - tall oil fatty acids. Thermal conductivity, compressive strength and stiffness of the foams of density ranging from ca. 100 to 680 kg/m3 have been determined. Comparison of the bio-based foams with reference foams derived from petrochemical resources demonstrated similar performance characteristics thus suggesting that bio-based foams can also serve as structural thermal break materials. Analytical m…

Surface and Intercalation Chemistry of Polycarboxylate Copolymers in Cementitious Systems.

2009

International audience; The Ca–Al-layered double hydroxide, the so-called AFm phase, is a product of cement hydration. It is shown that the interaction of this phase with anionic polycarboxylate ether (PCE)-based dispersant polymers is not a simple adsorption but a more complex intercalation phenomenon leading to the transient sequestration of the PCE within the AFm crystallites. As a result, part of the PCE is immobilized, forming a layered organo-mineral composite, and does not play its role of a dispersing agent. This article presents, along general considerations on the links between cement chemistry and rheology, a detailed investigation of the formation, structure, and stability of a …

Towards storage-stable high-content recycled tyre rubber modified bitumen

2018

The addition of crumb rubber particles as bitumen modifier can be currently considered as a well-established alternative to conventional polymers for bitumen modification. However, Recycle Tyre Rubber (RTR) modified binders still present drawbacks such as poor mix workability and hot storage stability. Within this study the authors try unlocking the full potential of devulcanised tyre rubber-heavy oils blend, named Liquid Rubber (LR), by exploring the possibility of tailoring recycled polymer modified bitumen with unconventional high-content of RTR and designed to overcome the above mentioned technological problems of RTR modified bitumen while keeping its advantages. Results show that LR-b…
