‘I don’t know the answer to that question’: a corpus-assisted discourse analysis of White House Press Briefings

White House Press Briefings, daily meetings with the press held by the White House Press Secretary, are the main information conduit for the White House (Kumar 2007). They are considered a “political chess game” where the Press Secretary and the press face a “wrestling match” (Partington 2006: 16). Our analysis is carried out on a corpus comprising all the Press Briefings across three presidencies from Clinton to Obama. The additional mark-up includes information about individual speakers and their role, allowing us to compare different discourse strategies adopted by the participants in the briefings at different points in time. Ultrasonic characterisation of poroux materials

International audience; Acoustic models of the acoustics of porous and perforated media involve a set of physical parameters. Some of the parameters, the tortusity, the viscous and thermal characteristic lengths are defined for a perfect incompressible and inviscid fluid saturating the porous medium. It is shown that ultrasonic propagation in air-saturated materials can be used to determine these parameters. A basic method involving air-coupled ultrasonic transducers is presented. Variants of this method and a practical implementation of one of these is proposed.

During an epidemiological survey carried out in the Botanical Garden at Bologna University, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) has been detected by applying PAS-ELISA technique infecting some ornamental species exhibiting a severe symptomatology on the leaves. Datura innoxia Miller. showed mosaic and leaf-curling; Globularia nudicaulis L. produced narrowed leaves with a yellow mosaic and/or variegation; Eupatorium cannabinum L. showed a systemic chlorotic and/or yellow mosaic and stunting. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) were employed to characterise these CMV isolates. Resume Introduction Les plaies de pied diabetique (PPD) sont un probleme frequent, associe a un risque eleve d’amputation et de mortalite. L’adressage rapide a une structure specialisee du pied diabetique permet d’ameliorer le taux de cicatrisation et de diminuer le risque d’amputation. Une proportion importante de patients avec une PPD sont adresses tardivement vers ces structures specialisees. Un parcours de soins primaires des patients avec une PPD a ete developpe par l’International Diabetic Foot Care Group en collaboration avec le D-Foot International pour ameliorer l’orientation de ces patients vers les structures specialisees.
