Exercise Diminishes Plasma Neurofilament Light Chain and Reroutes the Kynurenine Pathway in Multiple Sclerosis
2020
ObjectiveTo examine acute (single-bout) and training effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) vs standard exercise therapy (moderate continuous training [MCT]) on plasma neurofilament light chain (pNfL) and kynurenine (KYN) pathway of tryptophan degradation metabolites in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS).MethodsSixty-nine pwMS (Expanded Disability Status Scale score 3.0–6.0) were randomly assigned to a HIIT or an MCT group. Changes in pNfL and KYN pathway metabolites measured in blood plasma were assessed before, after, and 3 hours after the first training session as well as after the 3-week training intervention.ResultsAcute exercise reduced pNfL and increased the KYN pathw…
Abusiva attività bancaria, procedimento ex artt. 132-bis t.u.b. e 2409 cod. civ. e fallimento
2004
Multianalytical Approach to explain the darkening process of hematite pigment in paintings from ancient Pompeii after accelerated weathering experime…
2013
[EN] In this paper, recently excavated fresco painting fragments from the House of Marcus Lucretius (Pompeii) and not exposed to the atmosphere since the eruption of the Mount Vesuvius were subjected to a controlled SO2 atmosphere and high relative humidity. These experiments were conducted in order to simulate under accelerated conditions the possible deterioration of the hematite pigment and plaster. The mineralogical transformation of the polychromy and plaster was monitored using mainly Raman spectroscopy, a non-destructive technique, but also infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). After different exposure cycles to…
Topotecan-triggered degradation of topoisomerase I is p53-dependent and impacts cell survival.
2005
Abstract The anticancer drug topotecan belongs to the group of topoisomerase I (topo I) inhibitors. In the presence of topotecan, topo I cleaves the DNA but is unable to religate the single-strand break. This leads to stabilization of topo I-DNA–bound complexes and the accumulation of DNA strand breaks that may interfere with DNA replication. The molecular mechanism of controlling the repair of topo I-DNA covalent complexes and its impact on sensitivity of cells to topotecan is largely unknown. Here, we used mouse embryonic fibroblasts expressing wild-type p53 and deficient in p53, in order to elucidate the role of p53 in topotecan-induced cell death. We show that p53-deficient mouse embryo…
Algunas reflexiones acerca de la stjue de 9 de julio de 2020 sobre los pactos novatorios en materia de cláusulas suelo
2021
The Sentence of the Court of Justice of the European Union of July 9, 2020 comes to answer the five questions that, in its preliminary question, the Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 3 of Teruel asks about the validity of the new agreements in the context of the floor clauses, establishing jurisprudential doctrine on this matter about which our Supreme Court had previously ruled in its Judgments of October 16, 2017, in the sense of considering the agreed floor clause null as a consequence of the novation agreement and, subsequently, those of April 11, 2018 and September 13, 2018 in the opposite direction, declaring that the novation agreement was valid. It is a long-awaited and in…
A Metaphor for Identities in Transition through Urbanization and Globalization: Tofu and One Hundred Surnames
2019
The Chinese artist Chen Qiulin has been taking displacement and the resulting unrest in people’s identity as her persistent theme since the early 1990s. Focusing on a series of her works made since 2004 dealing explicitly with tofu and Chinese surnames, this paper examines her exploration of identities in transition in the context of China’s mass urbanization and globalization. By showing the artist’s conceptual evolution, her preference for materials and mediums, and her exhibition strategy, this paper explores two issues. First, it illuminates how the artist has transformed “tofu” and “surname” into a metaphor for the dilemma of identity under the urbanization in China. Second, it discuss…
Radical innovation by theoretical abstraction - a challenge for the user-centred designer
2016
AbstractIt is generally accepted that scientific disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and anthropology contribute beneficially to design by providing understanding of users’ needs, experiences, and desires. Arguably, however, these disciplines have more to contribute, because they include theories and models that can be applied as design frames and principles. More specifically, goal-setting, visualization, thematization, and conceptual reconfiguration are general mechanisms through which theories translate into design contributions. Actualizing radical design solutions via these mechanisms is discussed: theories provide appropriate means of abstraction, which allows ‘distance’ from u…
On Thinking the Tragic with Adorno
2016
This article seeks to provide a template for understanding the tragic dimension of Theodor W. Adorno’s philosophy through a reading of his early collaborative work with Max Horkheimer, the Dialectic of Enlightenment (1944). While Adorno’s view has often been considered to be tragic, little has been done to reconstruct the tragic dimension of his thought. I argue that the view of the human condition, presented in the Dialectic of Enlightenment, is founded on metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical convictions that have structural similarities with the positions held by theorists and philosophers of tragedy and the tragic. Since traces of these tragic elements can be found throughout Adorn…
Rhetoric of unity and cultural diversity in the making of European cultural identity
2011
The fundamental aim of the cultural policy of the European Union (EU) is to emphasize the obvious cultural diversity of Europe, while looking for some underlying common elements which unify the various cultures in Europe. Through these common elements, the EU policy produces ‘an imagined cultural community’ of Europe which is ‘united in diversity’, as one of the slogans of the Union states. This discourse characterizes various documents which are essential to the EU cultural policy, such as the Treaty of Lisbon, the European Agenda for Culture and the EU’s decision on the European Capital of Culture program. In addition, the discourse is applied to the production of cultural events in Europ…
Differential regulation of endothelial cell adhesion molecule expression by nitric oxide donors and antioxidants.
1998
Although nitric oxide (NO) and antioxidants inhibit adhesion molecule expression, their inhibitory effects on nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) activation may differ. The NO donors, but not 8-bromo-cGMP, decreased tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha)-induced VCAM-1, ICAM-1, and E-selectin expression by 11-70%. In contrast, NAC completely abolished VCAM-1 and E-selectin expression and decreased ICAM-1 expression by 56%. Gel shift assays demonstrate that NF-kappaB activation was inhibited by both NO and antioxidants. The activation of NF-kappaB involves the phosphorylation and degradation of its cytoplasmic inhibitor IkappaB-alpha by 26S proteasomes. The 26S proteasome inhibitor MG132 prev…
