Current Controversies in Classification, Management, and Prevention of Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw
2014
Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a serious complication associated with oral and intravenous bisphosphonate therapy that adversely affects the quality of life, producing significant morbidity. Since the first description of bone necrosis in patients receiving bisphosphonate therapy in 2003 [1], hundreds of studies were published about this topic and various national and international medical societies have published protocols and guidelines. Nevertheless, there are still many controversies regarding the classification, management, and prevention of BRONJ. Even the definition of BRONJ is still debated and changed with the progress of knowledge and experience. Accord…
Assessing transfusion practice in elective surgical patients: a baseline audit
2019
Background Externally generated hospital benchmarking data indicated that the blood transfusion rate within elective surgical orthopaedic and gastrointestinal patients at a metropolitan, tertiary healthcare facility was higher than comparable Australian hospitals. An investigation of transfusion practices was undertaken with the aim of understanding the reasons contributing to this higher incidence. Study Methods A chart audit was undertaken of every major, elective, surgical orthopaedic and gastrointestinal patient who received a blood transfusion between July and December 2017. The audit aimed to ascertain whether patients were screened and treated for preoperative anaemia and measure the…
Transfusion Need at Diagnosis or Its Development During the First Year of Diagnosis in Primary Myelofibrosis: Effect On Survival and Correlation with…
2009
Abstract Abstract 1909 Poster Board I-932 Background: The International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) for primary myelofibrosis (PMF) utilizes five independent predictors of inferior survival; of these, a hemoglobin level <10 g/dL has the highest impact on survival (Cervantes et al. Blood 2009;113:2895). In the current study, we examined the additional prognostic impact of transfusion need at diagnosis or becoming transfusion-dependent in the first year of diagnosis. These events were also correlated with JAK2 or TET2 mutational status. Methods: Patients were selected from the Mayo Clinic PMF database based on availability of bone marrow histology and IPSS-relevant information at diag…
Is 're-calibration' of standard cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk algorithms the panacea to improved CVD risk prediction and prevention?
2018
This editorial refers to ‘Equalization of four cardiovascular risk algorithms after systematic recalibration: individual-participant meta-analysis of 86 prospective studies’, by L. Pennells et al., doi:10.1093/eurheartj/ehy653.
Comprehensive geriatric assessment is an essential tool to support treatment decisions in elderly patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: A pros…
2015
We performed a multicenter study to validate the concept that a simple comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) can identify elderly, non-fit patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in whom curative treatment is not better then palliation, and to analyze potential benefits of treatment modulation after further subdividing the non-fit category by CGA criteria. One hundred and seventy-three patients aged > 69 treated with curative or palliative intent by clinical judgement only were grouped according to CGA into fit (46%), unfit (16%) and frail (38%) categories. Two-year overall survival (OS) was significantly better in fit than in non-fit patients (84% vs. 47%; p < 0.0001).…
Physical activity responsive miRNAs – Potential mediators of training responses in human skeletal muscle?
2013
1. The basics of miRNA-mediated regulation The plasticity of skeletal muscle is of utmost importance for responding to and coping with environmental demands that emerge from changes in physical activity patterns, nourishment, hormonal status, and health. As is well known, a sedentary lifestyle, aging, immobilization, and chronic diseases are associated with reduced muscle mass and function, while regular exercise improves muscle function and reduces the rate of decrement throughout life. 1 However, we do not have a complete understanding of the molecular factors controlling skeletal muscle adaptation to exercise stimuli. Recently identified microRNA molecules (miRNAs) have rapidly gained at…
Physicochemical stability of irinotecan injection concentrate and diluted infusion solutions in PVC bags
2000
Purpose. To determine the physicochemical stability of irinotecan injection concentrate and irinotecan infusion solutions after dilution in two commonly used infusion fluids (0.9% sodium chloride, 5% dextrose) in PVC bags, stored under refrigeration (2-8°C) or at room temperature either light protected or exposed to light. Methods. Stability of irinotecan injection concentrate was determined in the original amber glass vials. Diluted irinotecan infusion solutions were aseptically prepared by further dilution of irinotecan stock solution with either 0.9% sodium chloride or 5% dextrose in PVC bags, in amounts yielding irinotecan concentrations of 0.4, 1.0, or 2.8 mg/ml. Test solutions were s…
Pulmonary metastasectomy in colorectal cancer: a prospective study of demography and clinical characteristics of 543 patients in the Spanish colorect…
2013
Objectives To capture an accurate contemporary description of the practice of pulmonary metastasectomy for colorectal carcinoma in one national healthcare system. Design A national registry set up in Spain by Grupo Espanol de Cirugia Metastasis Pulmonares de Carcinoma Colo-Rectal (GECMP-CCR). Setting 32 Spanish thoracic units. Participants All patients with one or more histologically proven lung metastasis removed by surgery between March 2008 and February 2010. Interventions Pulmonary metastasectomy for one or more pulmonary nodules proven to be metastatic colorectal carcinoma. Primary and secondary outcome measures The age and sex of the patients having this surgery were recorded with the…
