The Monoclonal Antitoxin Antibodies (Actoxumab–Bezlotoxumab) Treatment Facilitates Normalization of the Gut Microbiota of Mice with Clostridium diffi…

2016

Antibiotics have significant and long-lasting impacts on the intestinal microbiota and consequently reduce colonization resistance against Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). Standard therapy using antibiotics is associated with a high rate of disease recurrence, highlighting the need for novel treatment strategies that target toxins, the major virulence factors, rather than the organism itself. Human monoclonal antibodies MK-3415A (actoxumab–bezlotoxumab) to C. difficile toxin A and toxin B, as an emerging non-antibiotic approach, significantly reduced the recurrence of CDI in animal models and human clinical trials. Although the main mechanism of protection is through direct neutraliza…

On the arithmetic and geometry of binary Hamiltonian forms

2011

Given an indefinite binary quaternionic Hermitian form $f$ with coefficients in a maximal order of a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb Q$, we give a precise asymptotic equivalent to the number of nonequivalent representations, satisfying some congruence properties, of the rational integers with absolute value at most $s$ by $f$, as $s$ tends to $+\infty$. We compute the volumes of hyperbolic 5-manifolds constructed by quaternions using Eisenstein series. In the Appendix, V. Emery computes these volumes using Prasad's general formula. We use hyperbolic geometry in dimension 5 to describe the reduction theory of both definite and indefinite binary quaternionic Hermitian forms.

Existence of dynamical low-rank approximations to parabolic problems

2021

The existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to dynamical low-rank evolution problems for parabolic partial differential equations in two spatial dimensions is shown, covering also non-diagonal diffusion in the elliptic part. The proof is based on a variational time-stepping scheme on the low-rank manifold. Moreover, this scheme is shown to be closely related to practical methods for computing such low-rank evolutions.

A Lebesgue-type decomposition for non-positive sesquilinear forms

2018

A Lebesgue-type decomposition of a (non necessarily non-negative) sesquilinear form with respect to a non-negative one is studied. This decomposition consists of a sum of three parts: two are dominated by an absolutely continuous form and a singular non-negative one, respectively, and the latter is majorized by the product of an absolutely continuous and a singular non-negative forms. The Lebesgue decomposition of a complex measure is given as application.

Unitary Groups Acting on Grassmannians Associated with a Quadratic Extension of Fields

2006

Let (V, H) be an anisotropic Hermitian space of finite dimension over the algebraic closure of a real closed field K. We determine the orbits of the group of isometries of (V, H) in the set of K-subspaces of V . Throughout the paper K denotes a real closed field and K its algebraic closure. Then it is well known (see, for example, [4, Chapter 2], [23]; see also [8]) that K = K(i) with i = √−1. Also we let (V,H) be an anisotropic Hermitian space (with respect to the involution underlying the quadratic field extension K/K) of finite dimension n over K. In this context we consider the natural action of the unitary group U = U(V,H) of isometries of (V,H) on the set Xd of all ddimensional K-subs…

On the Russo-Dye Theorem for positive linear maps

2019

Abstract We revisit a classical result, the Russo-Dye Theorem, stating that every positive linear map attains its norm at the identity.

Jordan Decompositions of Tensors

2022

We expand on an idea of Vinberg to take a tensor space and the natural Lie algebra which acts on it and embed them into an auxiliary algebra. Viewed as endomorphisms of this algebra we associate adjoint operators to tensors. We show that the group actions on the tensor space and on the adjoint operators are consistent, which endows the tensor with a Jordan decomposition. We utilize aspects of the Jordan decomposition to study orbit separation and classification in examples that are relevant for quantum information.

The forgotten mathematical legacy of Peano

2019

International audience; The formulations that Peano gave to many mathematical notions at the end of the 19th century were so perfect and modern that they have become standard today. A formal language of logic that he created, enabled him to perceive mathematics with great precision and depth. He described mathematics axiomatically basing the reasoning exclusively on logical and set-theoretical primitive terms and properties, which was revolutionary at that time. Yet, numerous Peano’s contributions remain either unremembered or underestimated.

The diamond partial order in rings

2013

In this paper we introduce a new partial order on a ring, namely the diamond partial order. This order is an extension of a partial order defined in a matrix setting in [J.K. Baksalary and J. Hauke, A further algebraic version of Cochran's theorem and matrix partial orderings, Linear Algebra and its Applications, 127, 157--169, 1990]. We characterize the diamond partial order on rings and study its relationships with other partial orders known in the literature. We also analyze successors, predecessors and maximal elements under the diamond order.
