When Investment in Basic Skills Gives Negative Returns

In recent years, the Norwegian government has invested heavily in improving basic skills in the adult population. Initiatives have included legislation, the introduction of work-based adult education programs, and reforms in schooling. In light of this investment, we explore trends in adult literacy and numeracy, by comparing data from two international surveys of adult skills, conducted in 2003 and 2012. Paradoxically, the proportion of low-performing adults appears to have increased, most significantly in the 16- to 24-year age group and in the foreign-born population. The study of moral judgements often centres on moral dilemmas in which options consistent with deontological perspectives (that is, emphasizing rules, individual rights and duties) are in conflict with options consistent with utilitarian judgements (that is, following the greater good based on consequences). Greene et al. (2009) showed that psychological and situational factors (for example, the intent of the agent or the presence of physical contact between the agent and the victim) can play an important role in moral dilemma judgements (for example, the trolley problem). Abstract [W(N2O2)(HN2O2)] (H4N2O2 = N,N′-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2-phenylenediamine) with a noninnocent ligand was formed by reaction of the alkoxide precursor [W(eg)3] (eg = the 1,2-ethanediolate dianion) with two equivalents of ligand. The phenol groups on one of the ligands are completely deprotonated and the ligand coordinates in a tetradentate fashion, whereas the other ligand is tridentate with one phenol having an intact OH group. The molecular structure, magnetic measurements, EPR spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations indicate that the complex is a stable radical with the odd electron situated on the tridentate amidophenoxide ligand. Electronic Energy Meter Based on a Tunnel Magnetoresistive Effect (TMR) Current Sensor

In the present work, the design and microfabrication of a tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) electrical current sensor is presented. After its physical and electrical characterization, a wattmeter is developed to determine the active power delivered to a load from the AC 50/60 Hz mains line. Experimental results are shown up to 1000 W of power load. A relative uncertainty of less than 1.5% with resistive load and less than 1% with capacitive load was obtained. The described application is an example of how TMR sensing technology can play a relevant role in the management and control of electrical energy.

Tutkin Götan hovioikeuteen lähetettyjä lapsenmurhatapauksia Jönköpingin ja Kronobergin lääneistä aikavälillä 1648 – 1681. Työssä käytetyt alkuperäislähteet koostuvat Götan hovioikeuden tuomiokirjoista, joihin kuuluvat sekä hovioikeuden antamat päätökset että Jönköpingin ja Kronobergin kihlakunnanoikeuksien hovioikeudelle lähettämät puhtaaksi kirjoitetut eli renovoidut tuomiokirjat. Tutkimusajalla lapsenmurha määriteltiin naimattoman naisen suorittamaksi aviottoman lapsen murhaksi. Rikos yhdistettiin kiinteästi seksuaalisen kanssakäymisen kontrolloimiseen. Työn tavoite on yhtenäistää Juutinrauman tullitiliaineistoja ja arvioida tullitilien käytettävyyttä Suomen ulkomaankaupan tutkimuksessa. Yhtenäistettyjen aikasarjojen pohjalta voidaan myös tarkastella Suomen – aikaisempaan tutkimukseen verrattuna pidemmän – pitkän aikavälin ulkomaankaupan kehitystä. Työssä rakennetaan uusi Suomea koskeva tietokanta FIN-STRO. Taustateoriana on siten lähtökohtaisesti ankkuroitua teoriaa (aineistopohjainen teoria, grounded theory) muistuttava lähestymistapa.
