Decompressive Craniectomy Improves QTc Interval in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients

2020

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is commonly associated with cardiac dysfunction, which may be reflected by abnormal electrocardiograms (ECG) and/or contractility. TBI-related cardiac disorders depend on the type of cerebral injury, the region of brain damage and the severity of the intracranial hypertension. Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is commonly used to reduce intra-cranial hypertension (ICH). Although DC decreases ICH rapidly, its effect on ECG has not been systematically studied. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in ECG in patients undergoing DC. Methods: Adult patients without previously known cardiac diseases treated for isolated TBI with DC were studied. EC…

El proyecto de un pórtico clasicista para la iglesia de los Santos Juanes de Valencia y su impacto en el entorno urbano (1788-1856)

2020

In the year 1788, the parish of Los Santos Juanes in Valencia proposed to the City Council the erection of same classical-style portico in order to beautify its outer eastern façade, surrounding the head of the temple and relying on the Plaza del Mercado. This portico was never built, but there would be an impact of such an architectural purpose in subsequent reform plans of that outstanding urban location.

2. Stato dell’arte e riferime…

Objectives pursued and achieved Conjectural reconstruction achieved the following results: • formulation of analytical documents which show how the planimetric and altimetric articulation are perfectly consistent with the functional program• definition of the level of uncertainty1. Brief description of the object of study The competition of the Palace of Justice in Rome takes place in four phases between 1884 and 1887. The project for the first competition in 1884 drawn up by the then very young Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857-1932) reveals a great deal of design expertise that transforms the complex functional program into an austere building in neo-florentine style. The original drawings of the building not realized kept in the Basile Endowment of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo have been the subject of preliminary study to the phases of analysis interpretation and conceptual reconstruction of the digital model. 2. State of the art and main bibliographical references The conjectural reconstruction on the basis of drawings and archival documents is a well-established and codified practice thanks to various disciplinary contributions at national and international level. On the Choice of the Extracellular Vesicles for Therapeutic Purposes

2019

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are lipid membrane vesicles released by all human cells and are widely recognized to be involved in many cellular processes, both in physiological and pathological conditions. They are mediators of cell-cell communication, at both paracrine and systemic levels, and therefore they are active players in cell differentiation, tissue homeostasis, and organ remodeling. Due to their ability to serve as a cargo for proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, which often reflects the cellular source, they should be considered the future of the natural nanodelivery of bio-compounds. To date, natural nanovesicles, such as exosomes, have been shown to represent a source of diseas…

Proportions. Science, Musique, Peinture et Architecture

2012

Single-cell analysis of population context advances RNAi screening at multiple levels

2012

Isogenic cells in culture show strong variability, which arises from dynamic adaptations to the microenvironment of individual cells. Here we study the influence of the cell population context, which determines a single cell's microenvironment, in image‐based RNAi screens. We developed a comprehensive computational approach that employs Bayesian and multivariate methods at the single‐cell level. We applied these methods to 45 RNA interference screens of various sizes, including 7 druggable genome and 2 genome‐wide screens, analysing 17 different mammalian virus infections and four related cell physiological processes. Analysing cell‐based screens at this depth reveals widespread RNAi‐induce…

Neurocognitive Predictors of Response to Intervention With GraphoGame Rime

2021

This study explores the neurocognitive predictors of response to intervention with GraphoGame Rime, an adaptive software game designed to aid the learning of English phonics. A cohort of 398 children (aged 6 – 7 years) who had participated in a recent Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) of GraphoGame Rime in the United Kingdom were studied. Half were randomly assigned to play GraphoGame Rime (GG Rime) and the other half were assigned to Business As Usual (BAU). A series of pretests were given prior to the intervention to all participants, designed to measure phonological awareness skills, executive function (EF) skills and the ability to synchronise finger tapping to a rhythmic beat. Finger t…

The role of motor system in action-related language comprehension in L1 and L2: An fMRI study

2018

The framework of embodied cognition has challenged the modular view of a language-cognition divide by suggesting that meaning-retrieval critically involves the sensory-motor system. Despite extensive research into the neural mechanisms underlying language-motor coupling, it remains unclear how the motor system might be differentially engaged by different levels of linguistic abstraction and language proficiency. To address this issue, we used fMRI to quantify neural activations in brain regions underlying motor and language processing in Chinese-English speakers’ processing of literal, metaphorical, and abstract language in their L1 and L2. Results overall revealed a response in motor ROIs …
