“I Like to Keep my Archaeology Dead”. Alienation and Othering of the Past as an Ethical Problem

2019

As archaeologists, we have to deal with the dead, and as David Clarke once said, we like to keep our archaeology dead. From an epistemological perspective, alienation from the dead seems almost inevitable; otherwise, we would only project today’s conditions onto the past. Therefore, the past must be, and must remain, a foreign country. These alienating processes have ethical implications, however, especially when it comes to the study of human remains. In this article, we analyze the structures within the scientific discipline of archaeology that normalize practices, such as the labeling of human bone material during excavations and the object-like display of skeletons in museums. We argue …

INFLUENCIA DE FACTORES FAMILIARES Y PERSONALES EN LA EVOLUCIÓN NEGATIVA DEL TDAH

2016

Abstract.INFLUENCE OF PERSONAL AND FAMILY FACTORS ON THE NEGATIVE COURSE OF ADHDObjective. To study the effect of the cumulative adversity on the course of ADHD symptoms, associated problems and dysfunctionality of ADHD children. Method. 61 families of children with a clinical diagnosis of ADHD combined subtype were evaluated on two different times (Time I: mean age = 8.7; Time II: mean age = 11). We developed a personal risk index (high levels of ADHD symptoms, high number of associated problems, presence of oppositionism, stressful child characteristics and family history of ADHD), a family risk index (presence of mothers’ psychopathology, high parental stress and dysfunctional discipline…

Zvaigznes HD179821 evolūcijas stadijas precizēšana izmantojot augstas izšķirtspējas spektroskopijas metodes

2016

Šajā darbā tiek veikta zvaigznes HD179821 augstas izšķirtspējas spektra analīze, kurš iegūts Terskolas observatorijā viļņu garuma diapazonā no 3100 līdz 6400Å. Darbā tika veikta spektra redukcija, līniju identificēšana, noteikta radiālā ātruma vērtība Vr=123,7±1,6 (km/s), izmērīti līniju ekvivalentie platumi un, izmantojot atmosfēru modeļu metodi, tika precizēti atmosfēras parametri – Teff = 6750±250 K, log(g) = 0-0,5±0,5 (cgs), ξ=6,5±1 km/s, iegūta dzelzs koncentrācija [Fe] = -0,17±0,11 dex un itrija [Y] = 0,35±0,29 dex koncentrācija attiecībā pret Saules vērtību. Iegūtie rezultāti salīdzināti ar citu autoru iegūtajiem datiem, lai precizētu evolūcijas stadiju, kādā atrodas pētāmā zvaigzne.…

Genetic variability at αs2-casein gene in Girgentana dairy goat breed

2014

Casein genes are highly polymorphic and the high degree of variability has qualitative and quantitative effects on milk composition thereby affecting chemical, physical and technological properties of goat milk. The aim of this work was to evaluate the genetic polymorphisms of the αs2-casein (CSN1S2) gene in the endangered Girgentana dairy goat breed in order to assess the genotypes distribution, as it is known genotype influences technological and nutritional milk properties. The study was performed on 207 sample of Girgentana goat breed, analysed with different PCR protocols. The most frequent alleles was A (0.722), followed by F (0.225), C (0.051) and E (0.002) while B, D and 0 alleles w…

Polymorphisms at β-defensin genes and mastitis in Valle del Belice dairy sheep: a case control study

2015

Mastitis is the most common and costly pathology affecting dairy animals. The identification of genetic markers that allow the inclusion of mastitis resistance in selection programs would help to reduce the costs due to the disease and the use of antibiotics. In recent years, β-defensin genes have been studied in several domestic species due to their important role in the innate immune response. The aim of this study was to determine whether β-defensin genes variability, β-defensin 1 (SBD1) and β-defensin 2 (SBD2), could distinguish between infected cases and healthy controls in Valle del Belice dairy sheep. Somatic cell count (SCC) is a powerful tool to identify animals with intramammary i…
