HIGH-RESOLUTION MG/CA RATIOS IN A CORALLINE RED ALGA AS A PROXY FOR BERING SEA TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS FROM 1902 TO 1967

We present the first continuous, high-resolution record of Mg/Ca variations within an encrusting coralline red alga, Clathromorphum nereostratum, from Amchitka Island, Aleutian Islands. Mg/Ca ratios of individual growth increments were analyzed by measuring a singlepoint, electron-microprobe transect, yielding a resolution of ~15 samples/year and a 65-year record (1902–1967) of variations. Results show that Mg/Ca ratios in the high-Mg calcite algal framework display pronounced annual cyclicity and archive late spring–late fall sea-surface temperatures (SST) corresponding to the main season of algal growth. Abstract Soil profiles developed from carbonate- and sulphate-rich deposits of the Gessoso-Solfifera Formation (Miocene) were sampled in central Sicily (544 mm annual precipitation and a strongly seasonal rainfall regime). Carbon and oxygen isotope data supported by mineralogical and thin section investigations indicate that meteoric waters and groundwaters dissolve and repricipitate carbonates and gypsum in the soil profiles. The boundary between the C horizon and the overlying one is the formation site of 18O depleted carbonates (calcite and/or dolomite) presumably precipitated from percolating waters during wet periods. Abstract Clumped isotope data from carbonated apatite from in vivo and in vitro samples are presented to refine the relationship between mineral growth temperature and carbonate clumped isotopic composition (Δ47). Δ47, δ18O and δ13C data were obtained from phosphoric acid digestion (T = 110 °C) of chemically untreated teeth from an African elephant, Greenland sharks, sand tiger sharks and synthetic apatites. These data cover a temperature range between 1 °C and 80 °C and enlarge the calibration dataset presented in Wacker et al. (2016) by a factor of five. Abstract We present a theoretical derivation of the exchange time, τex, needed to establish isotopic equilibrium between atmospheric CO2 in a cave and HCO3− dissolved in a thin water film covering the surface of a speleothem. Abstract Oxygen isotopes are the most commonly applied speleothem proxy for reconstructing Quaternary changes in precipitation and/or temperature. These interpretations are either limited to qualitative wetting and drying trends or rely on theoretical, experimental and/or empirical equilibrium isotope fractionation factors for more quantitative constraints. Abstract The curvature and slope of speleothem surfaces have been shown to affect the reaction rates in the aqueous carbonate system by altering the thickness of the CaCO3-precipitating solution. However, the effects of speleothem geometry and drip rate on the speleothem’s carbon and oxygen isotopic composition have yet to be investigated. Over more strongly sloping surfaces, solutions are thinner and flow faster. δ(13)C and δ(18)O values from sapwood of a single Pinus uncinata tree, from a high elevation site in the Spanish Pyrenees, were determined to evaluate the differences between whole wood and resin-free whole wood. This issue is addressed for the first time with P. uncinata over a 38-year long period. Results are also compared with published isotope values of α-cellulose samples from the same tree. The differences in δ(13)C and δ(18)O between whole wood and resin-free whole wood vary within the analytical uncertainty of 0.3 and 0.5 ‰, respectively, indicating that resin extraction is not necessary for sapwood of P. uncinata.
