A classification of European skulls from three time periods.
1987
We analyze the taxonomic structure of European populations at three time periods, the Early Middle Ages, the Late Middle Ages and the Recent Period. The data consist of sample means for 10 cranial variables based on 137, 108, and 183 samples for the three periods. Clustering by standard numerical taxonomic procedures reveals that the data are represented only poorly as hierarchic classifications. The clusters form significant and moderately strong associations with an arrangement of the samples by regions (geography) and by language family. Whereas during the early period, language family showed a stronger association with clusters based on cranial morphology, in the recent populations thes…
The analysis of the r…
«Widrige Winde»: Der Abbruch der schonischen Expedition aus der Sicht des preußischen Gesandten, des Freiherrn Friedrich Ernst von Cnyphausen
2017
There are two interpretations of Peter the Great’s motives for refusing to land on the Swedish island of Schonen in historiography: that the tsar feared unforeseen military risks and that he did not trust his allies, Denmark and Great Britain. In this article, the author attempts to analyse in a more detailed way the reasons and consequences for the mistrust in the Northern Alliance by looking at communications by Baron Friedrich Ernst von Cnyphausen, the Prussian ambassador in Copenhagen. It is shown that the Russophobic hysteria which grasped the Danish royal court in September 1716 looks completely irrational when we consider parallel attitudes in the Prussian court. Cnyphausen does not …

2021
In the eighteenth century there is a large number of stories, both handwritten and in print, that describe extraordinary and unlucky events of different kinds: monstrosities, eclipses, or storms, floods, earthquakes, eruptions, etc. These stories, with respect to Sicily, take the form of occasional printed news, although sometimes they may be included in serials organized by different criteria (topographic/chronological/subject). Surviving documents in archives and libraries offer some opportunities to deepen the study of issues concerning the circulation and dissemination of news about the same event, their credibility, their formal characters and content. History and Environmental Impact of Mining Activity in Celtic Aeduan Territory Recorded in a Peat Bog (Morvan, France)
2003
The present study aims to document historical mining and smelting activities by means of geochemical and pollen analyses performed in a peat bog core collected around the Bibracte oppidum (Morvan, France), the largest settlement of the great Aeduan Celtic tribe (ca. 180 B.C. to 25 A.D.). The anthropogenic Pb profile indicates local mining operations starting from the Late Bronze Age, ca. cal. 1300 B.C. Lead inputs peaked at the height of Aeduan civilization and then decreased after the Roman conquest of Gaul, when the site was abandoned. Other phases of mining are recognized from the 11th century to modern times. They have all led to modifications in plant cover, probably related in part to…
The use of wood with an anti-seismic function in the architecture of palermo during the 18th century
2016
The study analyzes the interventions in the historical buildings after the earthquakes that struck Palermo in 1726 and 1751, with a particular attention to the anti-seismic reinforcements. The research, based primarily on archival documents, focuses on a series of interventions in the architectural heritage, in which the use of wood for structural elements, was able to guarantee for an “antiseismic” reconstruction. Although wood was not commonly used as other materials (iron, for instance) in the post-earthquake reconstruction process of Palermo it was certified its use as an anti-seismic system in the reinforcements of the damaged buildings. It is documented, for instance, the insertion of…
