In this dissertation, I study national campaigns aimed at constructing Estonian national identity in 1934–1940. The campaigns were organized through the cooperation of Konstantin Päts’ authoritarian government and civil society. I focus on the folk art campaign and on the name changing campaign. The name changing campaign was the largest national project in Estonia, aiming at the Estonification of names. Initially, the campaign focused on changing individuals’ surnames and first names, but later also on changing the names of places, streets and properties. Inequality and Growth in a Developing Economy: Evidence from Regional Data (Spain, 1860–1930)

ABSTRACTThis article measures inequality at the provincial level in Spain for different benchmark years between 1860 and 1930. It then empirically assesses the relationship between economic growth and inequality. The results confirm that, although growing incomes did not directly contribute to reducing inequality, at least during the early stages of modern economic growth, other processes associated with economic growth such as the rural exodus to urban and industrial centers, the demographic transition, and the spread of literacy, among others, notably improved the situation of the bottom part of the population.

Outline of a sociology of translation informed by the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu

In this article I put forward a sociology of translation informed by the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu. Founded on a theory of action, this theory may be defined as a theory of translation practice. Translation practice is examined here through the study of the translation of symbolic goods, specifically American literature into French. The notions of ‘field’, ‘habitus’ and ‘illusio’ are briefly analysed and applied to American literature in French. The habitus of Marcel Duhamel and Maurice-Edgar Coindreau are examined, as well as the illusio specific to the science-fiction field. Tarkastelen työssäni Yrjö Karilasta (1891–1982) nuoriso-ongelman muotoilijana ja ratkaisijana 1920- ja 1930-luvuilla. Karilas oli opettajan koulutuksen saanut nuorisotyöntekijä sekä useiden tunnettujen nuortenkirjojen kirjoittaja. Hänen tavoitteenaan oli kasvattaa nuorista (lähinnä pojista ja nuorukaisista) kunnon kansalaisia ja kristittyjä. Karilaan toiminta kanavoitui NMKY:n poikatyön kehittämiseen ja nuorisotyöntekijöille suunnattujen kasvatusoppaiden sekä nuorille kirjoitettujen tietoteosten (esim. Pikku jättiläinen) ja suurmieselämäkertojen julkaisemiseen. Leipätyönsä hän teki kustannussihteerinä WSOY:llä, jossa hän erikoistui nuortenkirjallisuuteen sekä uskonnolliseen kirjallisuuteen.…
