Tomi Mertanen tarkasteli väitöstutkimuksessaan vuoden 1956 yleislakon poliittista tapahtumahistoriaa. Kyseessä on ensimmäinen tieteellisesti laadittu kuvaus yleislakon tapahtumahistoriasta. Mertanen selvitti lakon eri osapuolten keskinäistä vallankäyttöä lakon muodostaman poikkeustilanteen aikana. The article presents the position of “the Castle” on emigration (the President, government and the Council of the Republic of Poland) towards the events in Poland and the Eastern Bloc in 1956. The politicians and publicists of “the Castle”, observing some changes in the country, did not expect that they would lead to basic changes. The opinion prevailed that Poland was not an independent state and that the Soviet occupation still persisted. The purpose of my research is to demonstrate how and why Grotowski was involved with the politics and political system in Communist Poland – not only to what extent he was compromised but to what extent he compromised the authorities. I am especially concerned with determining the levels of risk, professional and personal, to which Grotowski was exposed, and what extent the Polish Secret Police and Communist Party were involved.
