Constructing an American fear culture from red scares to terrorism
2013
Building on the work of social analysts who have identified the emerging culture of fear in the USA, this article argues that the current fears about terrorism derive from deliberate campaigns by the world capitalism’s elites. It traces the history of political scares since the late 19th century to show an evolution from red scares to terrorism. While acknowledging the complexities of cultural constructions, the obsession with terrorism is shown as an outgrowth and offspring of earlier, anti-communist hysterias in the USA.

The treatment of madness in Spain in the second half of the 19th century: conceptual aspects.

This paper deals with the conceptual principles which governed the treatment of madness in Spain during the nineteenth century. Against the general view that treatments were targeted to diseases, we argue that clinicians were more syndrome-oriented than disease-oriented in their treatments. Mental syndromes were classified into groups according to the different treatments that were thought to be useful. We also describe the conceptual basis of moral treatment and study the correlation between somatic and mental disease in relation to treatment.

The role of the body and its functions in the psychic life of the individual has occupied a central place in psychoanalytic thinking and writing. Developmentally, the body and the ego as a psychic organization have an integral, mutual relationship which becomes particularly important during adolescence, when the body matures physically while at the same time cognition, self-reflection, and social relations develop. W trakcie XIX-wiecznych kasat klasztorów na obszarze cesarstwa rosyjskiego względy ekonomiczne stanowił istotny, może najważniejszy, ale niejedyny czynnik, uwzględniany przy podejmowaniu decyzji o zniesieniu domu zakonnego. Oficjalnie władze rosyjskie głosiły, że cały majątek klasztorny miał być wykorzystany na utrzymanie szkół oraz instytucji opiekuńczych i charytatywnych.
