A classification of European skulls from three time periods.

1987

We analyze the taxonomic structure of European populations at three time periods, the Early Middle Ages, the Late Middle Ages and the Recent Period. The data consist of sample means for 10 cranial variables based on 137, 108, and 183 samples for the three periods. Clustering by standard numerical taxonomic procedures reveals that the data are represented only poorly as hierarchic classifications. The clusters form significant and moderately strong associations with an arrangement of the samples by regions (geography) and by language family. Whereas during the early period, language family showed a stronger association with clusters based on cranial morphology, in the recent populations thes…

Two stories, one fate: age-heaping and literacy in Spain, 1877-1930

2021

This study looks at human capital in Spain during the early stages of modern economic growth. In order to do so, we have assembled a new dataset on ageheaping and literacy in Spain for both men and women between 1877 and 1930 based on six population censuses with information for 49 provinces. Our results show that age-heaping was less prevalent during the second half of the 19th century than previously thought and did not decrease until the early twentieth century. By contrast, literacy increased throughout the whole period. Interestingly, age-heaping and illiteracy rates depict similar spatial patterns which confirm the stark differences in human capital within Spain. Lastly, we raise crit…

Starting high school? On the origins of secondary education in Spain, 1857–1901

2022

AbstractThe development of modern educational systems radically altered the way knowledge and skills were transmitted. Yet, while elementary schooling rapidly expanded in late 19th and early twentieth centuries, secondary education struggled to find its way. This was also the case in Spain where, despite a growing demand, the provision of public secondary education during the second half of the 19th century was rather limited. As a result, private education, and especially that promoted by the Church, rushed to fill in the gap. Using a new database with municipal-level data, we examine what drove the expansion of private schools. As expected, demand-pull factors were critical. Still, the in…

ESPLORANDO IL MEDIOEVO: HENRY GALLY KNIGHT E LA SICILIA

2018

This essay is dedicated to the figure of Henry Gally Knight, a well-known british expert of medieval architecture, who decided to reach Sicily in 1836 to complete his Norman architecture investigations, together with the architect George Moore. During his stay in the island, besides visiting more traditional landmarks of classical antiquity, Gally Knight’s specific interests will lead him not only to study prestigious architectural complexes like Monreale and Cefalù, but also to trace the medieval vestiges even of the island’s inner parts, such as Randazzo, Maniace, Troina. Gally Knight’s tour and the esulting volumes he published – The Normans in Sicily: being a Sequel to “An architectural…

Crítica musical y pensamiento estético en la España de la Restauración: José María Esperanza y Sola (1834-1905)

2015

One of the most outstanding figures of music criticism in the Spanish Restoration was José María Esperanza y Sola (1834-1905), active for thirty years, from the late 1860s until the end of the century. During this period, Esperanza collaborated in different periodical publications and, particularly, “La Ilustración Española y Americana”, from whose pages he informed about the most important musical events celebrated in Madrid, judged according to a conservative aesthetic criterion, opposed to any novelty that infringe the traditional music system. On the basis of Esperanza´s thought, our study analyzes the different subjects that constitute his journalistic production.La crítica musical en …
