Strategies of Identification of a Base-Isolated Hospital Building by Coupled Quasi-Static and Snap-Back Tests

2020

In this paper, the description of a series of quasi-static pushing tests and dynamic snap-back tests is proposed, involving the base-isolated emergency building of the Palermo university hospital. The base isolation system is characterized by a set of double-curved friction pendulum isolators placed on the top of the columns of the underground level, characteristics that cannot be found in the experimental studies available in the literature. The aim of the work was to investigate the static and dynamic properties of the building in question and comparing the in-situ results with the characteristics assigned during the design process and to assess the level of agreement. Static lateral push…

Modelling load-transmission mechanisms in axially loaded RC columns retrofitted with steel jackets

2018

The use of steel jacketing technique is a common practice for retrofitting existing reinforced concrete (RC) columns, as it allows increasing load-carrying capacity and ductility of the member. When the external jacket has no-end connections – i.e. the jacket is indirectly loaded- the load sustained by the column is transferred from the inner RC core to the external jacket through shear stresses along the contact surface. The assessment of this mechanism is quite complex, due to the marked non-linear behaviour of constituent materials and to the calibration of a proper shear stress-relative slip constitutive law of the concrete-to-steel interface. In this paper, a step-by-step analytical ap…

Evaluation of geomorphometric characteristics and soil properties after a wildfire using Sentinel-2 MSI imagery for future fire-safe forest

2021

Abstract Understanding spatiotemporal geomorphological and pedological changes as a consequence of wildfires can allow stakeholders, land planners, and policymakers to design efficient fire safety-based afforestation and restoration programs of forest lands. The use of remote sensing techniques is a key tool to achieve this goal. The suitable combination of Sentinel-2 MSI data for mapping of different spectral indices related to burn severity and their relationship with other morphometric and soil properties can contribute to a better understanding of the impact of fire, and this is relevant in regions where is still scarce fire-related research such as Turkey. In this investigation, the us…

Using Genetic Algorithms for Optimizing the PPC in the Highway Horizontal Alignment Design.

2016

Various studies have emphasized the interesting advantages related to the use of new transition curves for improving the geometric design of highway horizontal alignments. In a previous paper, one of the writers proposed a polynomial curve, called a polynomial parametric curve (PPC), proving its efficiency in solving several design problems characterized by a very complex geometry (egg-shaped transition, transition between reversing circular curves, semidirect and inner-loop connections, and so on). The PPC also showed considerable advantages from a dynamic perspective, as evidenced by the analysis of the main dynamic variables related to motion (as well as rate of change of radial accelera…

Opettajuuden muutos 1950-luvulta 2010-luvulle

2017

Pro gradu -tutkielmani tavoitteena on tutkia, miten opettajuus on muuttunut 1950-luvulta 2010-luvulle ja millaisia ominaisuuksia opettajuudelle annetaan vuosikymmenien saatossa. Tutkimukseni on laadullinen tutkimus, jossa tutkimusmetodina käytän narratiivisuutta. Tutkimukseni aineisto koostuu seitsemästä kirjoitelmasta, jotka on kerätty eri vuosikymmeninä 1950-2010 valmistuneilta luokanopettajilta. Analysoin aineiston narratiivisen kategorisen sisällönanalyysin avulla. Tutkimustulosteni perusteella opettajat määrittelevät opettajuuden samoista osa-alueista koostuvana. Näitä ovat opettajan persoonallisuus, opettajan rooli, opetus, oppilaat ja vanhempien asema. Tulokset osoittavat muutoksen, …

Children in advertisements : visual representation of children in Time magazine, volumes of 1994, 2004 and 2014

2017

Mainosten representaatiot vaikuttavat käsitykseemme itsestämme ja muista. Vaikka mainontaa on tutkittu laajasti, lapsia ja mainontaa on tutkittu lähinnä siitä näkökulmasta, millaisia mainoksia lapsille on suunnattu tai miten mainonta vaikuttaa lapsiin. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella lasten representaatiota aikuisille suunnatuissa mainoksissa. Lisäksi halutaan selvittää ovatko mainokset muuttuneet vuosien aikana. Tutkimuksen aineistona ovat Time-lehden vuosikerrat 1994, 2004 ja 2014. Aineistossa on kaiken kaikkiaan 80 erillistä mainosta, joiden pohjalta tyypillinen representaatio luotiin. Kyseisinä vuosina mainosmäärät aikajärjestyksessä olivat: 19, 37 ja 24. Teoreettinen vii…

Some Applications of the Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem

2021

We consider a C 1 vector field X defined on an open subset U of the plane, with compact closure. If X has no singular points and if U is simply connected, a weak version of the Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem says that the limit sets of X in U are empty but that one can defined non empty extended limit sets contained into the boundary of U. We give an elementary proof of this result, independent of the classical Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem. A trapping triangle T based at p, for a C 1 vector field X defined on an open subset U of the plane, is a topological triangle with a corner at a point p located on the boundary ∂U and a good control of the tranversality of X along the sides. The principal app…

On presentations for mapping class groups of orientable surfaces via Poincaré's Polyhedron theorem and graphs of groups

2021

The mapping class group of an orientable surface with one boundary component, S, is isomorphic to a subgroup of the automorphism group of the fundamental group of S. We call these subgroups algebraic mapping class groups. An algebraic mapping class group acts on a space called ordered Auter space. We apply Poincaré's Polyhedron theorem to this action. We describe a decomposition of ordered Auter space. From these results, we deduce that the algebraic mapping class group of S is a quotient of the fundamental group of a graph of groups with, at most, two vertices and, at most, six edges. Vertex and edge groups of our graph of groups are mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with one, tw…

Do young graduates with professional and vocational master's degrees regard themselves as competent to hold their jobs ?

2016

En ligne sur http://www.cereq.fr/content/download/16090/129720/file/Trai118.pdf; Professional and vocational courses requiring 5 years' post-secondary study are supposed to meet specific needs for competences in a given area of employment. Young graduates believe they have acquired the specific competences they think their employers require. In their view, the shortfall lies in their general competences. Is this a reason to question the increasingly vocational nature of university courses?
