In 1908 Anna de Noailles starts a tour of Sicily that triggers her real emotions. Pal…

This paper analyzes Rodrigo Rosa’s novel El material humano (2009), especially its representation of violence as seen through …

2013

This paper aims to examine, on the one hand, the presence of Lope’s historical dramas on contemporary stage to confirm their continuity; and, on the other, to reflect on the distinctive features of the staging of these dramas from a specific corpus of performances dating from the last decades. The goal is to observe the current relevance of these dramas and performances, to study under what ethical and aesthetic assumptions characters are now represented and the historical episodes that Lope used in the creation of his fictions, as well as to analyze the possible connections between History, Lope and the audience of the 21st century.

Historical aspects of the translations and translators of Don Quixote in Germany in the 20th century

2013

2008

The article discusses the concept of semiotics function in Hjelmslev, finding sources of the theory of language’s stratification. The semiotic function, which is in Hjelmslev the principle underlying the dynamic layering, is identified here as both an attraction of two heterogeneous spaces and as a set of operations of sense’s establishment. At historiographic level, this article presents a new hypothesis of interpretation, that the hjelmslevian structuralism has not built a static theory of language, disinterested to the cognitive dimension, but a careful theory to operational aspects of semiosis.

Moral transgression, disease and holistic health in the Livingstonia Mission in late nineteenth and early twenttieth-century Malawi

2009

This article examines ideas of morality and health, and connections between moral transgression and disease in both Scottish missionary and Central African thought in the context of the Livingstonia Mission of the Presbyterian Free Church of Scotland in Malawi during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.2 By concentrating on debates, conflicts and co-operation between missionaries and Africans over the key issues of beer drinking and sexual morality, this article explores the emergence of a new ‘moral hygiene’ among African Christian communities in Northern Malawi.<br><br>Este artículo analiza las ideas sobre moralidad y salud, así como las relaciones entre transgre…

Samuel Fernberger's rejected doctoral dissertation: A neglected resource for the history of ape research in America.

2009

I summarize a never-completed 1911 doctoral dissertation on ape behavior by Samuel Fernberger of the University of Pennsylvania. Included are observations on many behavioral patterns including sensory and perceptual function, learning, memory, attention, imagination, personality, and emotion in an orangutan and two chimpanzees. There are examples of behavior resembling insight, conscience, tool use and imitation. Language comprehension was good but speech production was minimal. The document appears to contradict a brief published article on the project by William Furness in that punishment was frequently used. The document is important for understanding Fernberger's early career, for antic…

Parental effects on offspring longevity--evidence from 17th to 19th century reproductive histories.

2004

Family studies provide support for a modest genetic influence on offspring life span, although the magnitude of these correlations is small. The study aimed to clarify the relative contributions of parental age at birth and overall parental longevity on offspring lifespan, and to identify the biological and cultural mechanisms.Information was derived from two village genealogies (1650-1927) encompassing 9979 births (5315 males, 4664 females). Data selection was guided by the inclusion of information about parental age at birth and lifespan, offspring lifespan and cohort-specific life expectancy.Parental age at reproduction displayed a negative association with offspring survivability, which …
