2011
International audience; Issue 5 of Interfaces – which is reproduced in this number – contains among other contributions papers by John Dixon Hunt, W.J.T. Mitchell and Jean-Michel Rabaté as well as by Marie-Odile Bernez and Maurice Géracht. Michel Baridon also provided a survey of research centres and periodicals, and an up-to-date bibliography devoted to the question, in which he carefully listed the then most recent major contributions to text/image theory in the fields of arts and literature, psychology, linguistics and sciences. His concluding words were “les perspectives qui s’ouvrent sont neuves et profondes […] Tout cela n’ira pas sans beaucoup de travail […] mais toute démarche novat…
Skills Behind the Robotics : How to Re-educate Workers for the Future
2019
The aim of this study is to respond to the educational needs of the future, considering automation and robotics. It is inevitable that automation and robotics are changing our lives and they create challenges for the future work life and education. In this study, we investigate what is the educational background of the unemployed people who are in danger of being replaced by automation and what is their educational resilience for adapting work life changes. The data of this study consist of the latest PIAAC data (The Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies). Based on the research we develop a model for re-educating the people who have lost their jobs. peerReviewed

Digital Stories with Children: Examining Digital Storytelling as a Pedagogical Process in ECEC
2020
Modern digital technologies have become common in educational settings of all levels. This has made the use of digital storytelling (DST) more applicable in early childhood education and care (ECEC). This paper examines the implementation of DST, aiming to answer the following questions: 1) How to support children’s active participation throughout the DST process in ECEC, and 2) how do 21st century skills manifest in the DST process? The study was conducted between 2017 and 2018, when two cycles of DST projects were implemented in four Finnish ECEC centres as part of a European project. The data consist of interviews with educators (N=15) and children (N=51), as well as documentation of the…
Educational Robotics: Evaluating the Role of Computational Thinking in Attaining 21st Century Skills
2022
Abstract Educational Robotics (ER) has gained prominence in the literature on Computational Thinking (CT) because of its modularity, a feature that potentially facilitates the development of abstract thinking through complex robotic parts. The field of robotics encompasses the characteristics of technology, intelligence, embodiment, and interaction, and these characteristics can serve as means of instruction for CT. Essential 21st Century Skills include decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and the use of algorithms; which are fundamental to effective problem-solving skills. Although CT is believed to be the key to developing 21st Century Skills, its role in doing so is significa…

Using game elements to increase students’ motivation for providing peer assistance
2017
Master's thesis Multimedia and Educational Technology MM500 - University of Agder 2017 Abstract Peer assistance is a support system where people of equal status help each other solve problems. It is also a recognized method within education where students support each other with their assignments. The positive effect of peer assistance is well known, and it would be favorable if more students participated and took on the role as peer-teachers. To increase the activity of peer assistance, several incentives can be used, including game elements. In “Using game elements to increase peer assistance among university students”, (Nordengen & Brinch, 2016, p. 1) tried to predict which game elements…
Taitamisen tiede - tietämisen taide : taidon oppimisen arkkitehtuuri
2016
The purpose of this research was to study skill learning and the meaning of the art and skill subjects in Finnish comprehensive school. During the last decade, there have been many discussions in the media about the position of the art and skill subjects in our school system and the curriculum. The beginning, the idea, of this study can be located in 2003, when we educators were in the middle of designing the new curriculum for the year 2004. In that curriculum the amount of the art and skill subjects was decreasing, because the amount of the optional subjects decreased from 20 to 13. Many teachers asked: why was that happening? They had a feeling, that the direction was not right. I was al…
The Taboo of the Perverse Dying Body
2014
A human being is continuously living towards death within a mortal body that is dying little by little, second after second. In the gloss of popular media, the taboo reality of this stain of mortality is hidden by a diversion, which is created by the multiple pornographies of visual culture: the pornography of perfect bodies and the pornography of violent death. No longer invisible or ‘unspeakable’, the taboo body has been appropriated to serve a function in the mainstream didactics. Both the lusus naturae of natural bodies and the decay of sickness and death are squeezed into such roles in the postmodern visual narrative that the mortality of the human being appears unlikely and accidental…
Impact of Mediterranean Diet on Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases and Longevity
2021
The average life expectancy of the world population has increased remarkably in the past 150 years and it is still increasing. A long life is a dream of humans since the beginning of time but also a dream is to live it in good physical and mental condition. Nutrition research has focused on recent decades more on food combination patterns than on individual foods/nutrients due to the possible synergistic/antagonistic effects of the components in a dietary model. Various dietary patterns have been associated with health benefits, but the largest body of evidence in the literature is attributable to the traditional dietary habits and lifestyle followed by populations from the Mediterranean re…
