Methods: In this study, an automatic method has been proposed to characterize the ciliary motility from cell cultures by means of a motility index using a dense optical flow algorithm. This method allows us to determine the ciliary beat frequency (CBF) together with a ciliary motility index of the cells in the cultures. The use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has increased significantly in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) in order to prevent tracheal intubation and its complications. Unfortunately, NIV failure represents a frequent event, with rates that in some cases reach 40%. Mask intolerance, agitation, and delirium may lead to NIV failure, thus requiring endotracheal intubation. NIV failure rates are higher in patients without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and, when used in acute hypoxemic failure, its failure is associated with an increased mortality rate. Purpose There is a lack of consensus on the most appropriate early diagnostic strategy, criteria for early access to treatment and follow-up approach for patients with COPD. Materials and methods A Delphi consensus project investigated the early management of COPD. We formulated two questionnaires for completion by pneumologists in Italy. Results A total of 207 specialists completed questionnaire 1 and 184 of them questionnaire 2, between November 2016 and October 2017. Early diagnosis of COPD was considered uncommon for 93.2% of the expert panel. OBJECTIVES: Although the importance of serum Procalcitonin (PCT) levels at diagnosis is well established in adult Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP), its use remains controversial in pediatric CAP. The aim of our study is to investigate the role of PCT and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in the assessment of pediatric CAP severity defined by the extent of consolidation on chest X-rays and the presence of pleural effusion.
