Effects of heat treatments on the properties of copper phthalocyanine films deposited by glow-discharge-induced sublimation
2006
Copper phthalocyanine films have been deposited by glow-discharge-induced sublimation. The films have undergone postdeposition heat treatments in air at 250 and 290 °C for different times, ranging from 30 min to 14 h. The properties of as-deposited and heated films have been investigated by different techniques in order to determine the effects of heat treatments on the film properties. Fourier transform infrared analysis and UV−visible optical absorption analysis point out a gradual evolution of the film structure from a mixture of α and β polymorphs to the only β polymorph in the sample heated at 290 °C for 14 h. A pronounced decrease of carbon and nitrogen atomic percentages against an o…
Chemical stiffening of constructs between polymeric microparticles based on a hyaluronic acid derivative and mesenchymal stem cells: rheological and …
2019
Our research group has recently developed microparticles of a hyaluronic acid derivative used for bottom-up growth of microparticles/human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). In this work, we investigated a strategy to increase the stiffening of aggregated constructs between microparticles and hMSCs. In particular, we applied a Michael-type crosslinking procedure between microparticles to allow a chemically driven and cell-compatible stiffening of constructs. Two batches of microparticles were functionalized with thiol and maleimide groups, respectively, and were then mixed to allow chemical crosslinking. The adhesion of hMSCs was controlled through addition of the adhesive peptide cyclo(-Arg-G…
A New Hyaluronic Acid Derivative Obtained from Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization as a siRNA Vector for CD44 Receptor Tumor Targeting.
2015
Two derivatives of hyaluronic acid (HA) have been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), starting from an ethylenediamino HA derivative (HA-EDA) and by using diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) as a monomer for polymerization. Both samples, indicated as HA-EDA-pDEAEMA a and b, are able to condense siRNA, as determined by gel retardation assay and resulting complexes show a size and a zeta potential value dependent on polymerization number, as determined by dynamic light scattering measurements. In vitro studies performed on HCT 116 cell line, that over express CD44 receptor, demonstrate a receptor mediated uptake of complexes, regardless of their surface charge. New…
A nanostructured sensor of hydrogen peroxide
2017
Abstract A nanostructured electrochemical sensor of hydrogen peroxide was fabricated growing self-standing Pd nanowires (Pd NWs) into polycarbonate (PC) membranes through a simple metal galvanic deposition. Conditions of deposition were adjusted in order to attain 2–5 μm long Pd wires. Characterization of Pd-NWs was performed by scanning electrode microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Properties of the nanostructured sensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in phosphate buffer—ethanol solution. Addition of pure ethanol to the test solution was essential in order to increase wettability of the nanostructures. Sensing features were comp…
Enhancement of photoconversion efficiency in dye-sensitized solar cells exploiting pulsed laser deposited niobium pentoxide blocking layers
2015
Abstract Among all the photovoltaic technologies developed so far, dye-sensitized solar cells are considered as a promising alternative to the expensive and environmentally unfriendly crystalline silicon-based solar cells. One of the possible strategies employed to increase their photovoltaic efficiency is to reduce the charge recombination at the cell conductive substrate through the use of a compact blocking layer. In this paper, we report on the fabrication and characterization of dye-sensitized solar cells employing niobium pentoxide (Nb 2 O 5 ) thin film blocking layer deposited through the pulsed laser deposition technique on conductive substrates. The careful selection of the optimal…
Advanced ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene/antioxidant-functionalized carbon nanotubes nanocomposites with improved thermo-oxidative resistance
2015
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) functionalized with hindered phenol moieties are dispersed in ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), and the stabilizing action of the antioxidant (AO) functionalized CNTs (AO-f-CNTs) is studied through a combination of rheological and spectroscopic (FT-IR) analyses. The effectiveness of two alternative compounding methods, namely hot compaction (HC) and melt mixing (MM), is compared. The combination of high temperature and mechanical stress experienced during MM brings about noticeable degradation phenomena of the matrix already in the course of the compounding step. Differently, the milder conditions of the HC process preserve the stability …
Double bond-functionalized POSS: dispersion and crosslinking in polyethylene-based hybrid obtained by reactive processing
2016
Polyethylene-based organic inorganic hybrids were prepared by one-step reactive melt mixing using a mono-functionalized nanofiller, i.e., allyl-heptaisobutyl-substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (1POSS) and a multi-functionalized octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (8POSS). The hybrids were also prepared in dicumyl peroxide (DCP) presence and morphological, spectroscopical and calorimetric analysis were carried out. Moreover, rheological measurement and Sohxlet extraction were performed on investigated samples. It was inferred that double bonds of POSS functional groups were triggered by radicals coming from the peroxide decomposition or from the degradation reactions…
Mechanical and rheological properties of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene copolymer reinforced with carbon nanotubes: effect of proc…
2017
Abstract Styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene (SBS)-based nanocomposites filled with unmodified and –COOH functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been formulated at different processing conditions in order to provide an understanding of the influence of the processing temperature and mixing speed on the nanofillers dispersion and on the overall properties of the nanocomposites. The evaluation of the nanocomposites’ mechanical and rheological behavior reveals that the effect of the processing speed on the final properties is almost negligible. Differently, the processing temperature influences strongly the mechanical and rheological properties of SBS-based nanocomposites. Indeed, for the nanoco…
Experimental assessment of the improved properties during aging of flax/glass hybrid composite laminates for marine applications
2018
The investigation for natural fibers composites in terms of performance, durability, and environmental impact for structural applications in marine environments is a relevant challenge in scientific and industrial field. On this context, the aim of this work is to assess the durability and mechanical stability in severe environment of epoxy/glass–flax hybrid composites. For the sake of comparison, also full flax and glass epoxy composites were investigated. All samples were exposed to salt–fog environmental conditions up to 60 aging days. Wettability behavior during time was compared with water uptake evolution to assess water sensitivity of hybrid composite configurations. Moreover, quasi-…
Thermo-oxidative resistant nanocomposites containing novel hybrid-nanoparticles based on natural polyphenol and carbon nanotubes
2015
Abstract Quercetin (Q), a natural antioxidant molecule, is physically immobilized onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) bearing covalently-linked long-chain alkyl functional groups, and the so obtained hybrid-nanoparticles are used to prepare Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene-based nanocomposite films with enhanced thermo-oxidation resistance. The effective immobilization of the Q molecules is confirmed by spectroscopic (micro-Raman, ATR-FTIR, and FTIR) and thermo-gravimetric analyses, and the influence of the nanoparticles on the rheological behaviour and thermo-oxidative stability of the nanocomposites are investigated. Rheological analyses (linear viscoelasticity and stress re…
