Visualization of Jacques Lacan's Registers of the Psychoanalytic Field, and Discovery of Metaphor and of Metonymy. Analytical Case Study of Edgar All…
2016
We start with a description of Lacan's work that we then take into our analytics methodology. In a first investigation, a Lacan-motivated template of the Poe story is fitted to the data. A segmentation of the storyline is used in order to map out the diachrony. Based on this, it will be shown how synchronous aspects, potentially related to Lacanian registers, can be sought. This demonstrates the effectiveness of an approach based on a model template of the storyline narrative. In a second and more comprehensive investigation, we develop an approach for revealing, that is, uncovering, Lacanian register relationships. Objectives of this work include the wide and general application of our met…
The infinite dihedral group
2022
We describe the infinite dihedral group as automaton group. We collect basic results and give full proofs in details for all statements.
Quantum Toda Lattice: a Challenge for Representation Theory
2021
Quantum Toda lattice may solved by means of the Representation Theory of semisimple Lie groups, or alternatively by using the technique of the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method. A comparison of the two approaches, which is the purpose of the present review article, sheds a new light on Representation Theory and leads to a number of challenging questions.
Single chain structure in thin polymer films: Corrections to Flory's and Silberberg's hypotheses
2005
Conformational properties of polymer melts confined between two hard structureless walls are investigated by Monte Carlo simulation of the bond-fluctuation model. Parallel and perpendicular components of chain extension, bond-bond correlation function and structure factor are computed and compared with recent theoretical approaches attempting to go beyond Flory's and Silberberg's hypotheses. We demonstrate that for ultrathin films where the thickness, $H$, is smaller than the excluded volume screening length (blob size), $\xi$, the chain size parallel to the walls diverges logarithmically, $R^2/2N \approx b^2 + c \log(N)$ with $c \sim 1/H$. The corresponding bond-bond correlation function d…
Novel procedure for the template synthesis of metal nanostructures
2008
In this work we describe a novel method for the fabrication of a regular and uniform array of Cu nanowires into anodic alumina membranes. It is based on galvanic contact between the metal sputtered film covering the bottom of template and a less noble metal. The growth rate was estimated as function of the immersion time. Nanowires with aspect ratio from 12 to 286 were obtained by adjusting the deposition time. Copper nanowires were found to be polycrystalline with an average crystalline size of about 40 nm. This procedure can be applied for the preparation of a wide range of metallic nanostructures and it can be easily scaled up for industrial processing. Keywords: Displacement deposition,…
Surfactant-assisted synthesis of titanium nanoMOFs for thin film fabrication
2021
We use dodecanoic acid as a modulator to yield titanium MOF nanoparticles with good control of size and colloid stability and minimum impact to the properties of the framework to enable direct fabrication of crystalline, porous thin films. ispartof: CHEMICAL COMMUNICATIONS vol:57 issue:72 pages:9040-9043 ispartof: location:England status: published
Video-based Pain Level Assessment: Feature Selection and Inter-Subject Variability Modeling
2018
Automatic pain level assessment, based on video features, may provide clinically-relevant, objective measures of pain intensity. In various clinical contexts accurate pain level estimation by health care personnel is challenging. This problem is compounded by considerable inter- and intra-individual variability of both perceived pain levels and of the associated facial expressions, especially at low pain levels. Thus, providing objective video-based indices for pain level assessment is a rather computationally challenging problem. In the present work both geometric and color-based features were extracted. The most informative features were identified with lasso regression, and subject varia…
Vulvar Epidermal Inclusion Cyst as a Long-term Complication of Female Genital Mutilation
2016
We present a case report of a patient with epidermal inclusion cyst as a late complication of female genital mutilation (FGM). We describe the management of the patient, and a review of the literature. We report the clinical and pathological findings in a 37-year-old female patient from Nigeria, with a clitoral mass of 1 year duration. She declared to have an FGM since she was 5 years. The lesion was excised successfully with good cosmetic results. Histological examination revealed epidermal cyst with the presence of granular layer. An epidermal inclusion cyst can develop as a long-term consequence of FGM.
Symmetries and equations of smooth quartic surfaces with many lines
2017
We provide explicit equations of some smooth complex quartic surfaces with many lines, including all 10 quartics with more than 52 lines. We study the relation between linear automorphisms and some configurations of lines such as twin lines and special lines. We answer a question by Oguiso on a determinantal presentation of the Fermat quartic surface.
