Home-exercise Childhood Obesity Intervention: A Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Print Versus Web-based (Move It) Platforms.
2018
Abstract Purpose To compare the impact of adhering to a Mediterranean diet plus mixed physical exercise program (Move-It) implemented by means of printed instructions or via a web-platform (with or without e-mail support) on body composition, physical fitness, and blood pressure. Design and Methods Randomized clinical trial. Fifty-two overweight or obese Spanish children and adolescents were randomly assigned to the print-based (n = 18), Move-It (n = 18), or Move-It plus support (n = 16) intervention groups. Two-way mixed ANOVA tests were used to compare any changes between the groups in terms of percentage body fat, physical fitness (VO2peak), handgrip strength, and systolic and diastolic …
Prevalence of pressure ulcers in the paediatric population and in primary health care: An epidemiological study conducted in Spain.
2018
Abstract Aim The primary goal of this study was to estimate the prevalence of pressure ulcers in the paediatric population cared for in primary health care. Materials The data of this epidemiological study were extracted from the records of the 24 departments that attended to an approximate population of 1 million inhabitants between 0 and 18 years old from 2012 to 2015. The study included children requiring assistance to reduce pressure ulcer incidence. The paediatric population was categorised into neonates and infants (0–2 years), young child (3–6 years), child (7–12 years) and adolescents (13–18 years). The primary outcome was information on the prevalence of pressure ulcers. Secondary …
Active play exercise intervention in children with asthma: a pilot study
2016
Objective Increased physical activity (PA) may be beneficial for children with asthma. Knowledge about how to intervene and encourage children with asthma to be physically active is required. In the present study, we aimed to pilot a 6-week exercise intervention designed as active play and examine attendance rate, exercise intensity and children9s perceptions of participating. Methods 6 children with asthma (4 boys, 2 girls) aged 10–12 years, participated in 60 min of active play exercise twice weekly. A mixed-methods design was applied. The data analysed included attendance rate, exercise intensity assessed by heart rate (HR) monitoring during exercise sessions, registration and descriptio…
Acoustics of snoring and automatic snore sound detection in children
2017
Objective Acoustic analyses of snoring sounds have been used to objectively assess snoring and applied in various clinical problems for adult patients. Such studies require highly automatized tools to analyze the sound recordings of the whole night's sleep, in order to extract clinically relevant snore- related statistics. The existing techniques and software used for adults are not efficiently applicable to snoring sounds in children, basically because of different acoustic signal properties. In this paper, we present a broad range of acoustic characteristics of snoring sounds in children (N = 38) in comparison to adult (N = 30) patients. Approach Acoustic characteristics of the signals we…
A survey around the Italian pediatric units on current clinical practice for Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)
2019
Background During recent years, interest on Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) in pediatric age has increased, due to the impact on quality of life, psycho-physical attitude and other serious morbidities if undiagnosed and untreated. Methods Italian Pediatric Respiratory Diseases Society (SIMRI) SDB-Working Group carried out an exploratory survey in Italy, from January to December 2016, to assess the diagnostic and therapeutic pathways, perception and relevance of SDB in Italian Hospitals. Results A questionnaire was sent to 180 Pediatric Units (PUs) distributed throughout the Italy; 102 Pediatric Units (PUs; 56.6%) answered and among them 57% dealt with SDB, and 94% recognized SDB as a major…
Psychometric properties of the updated EORTC module for assessing quality of life in patients with lung cancer (QLQ-LC29): an international, observat…
2020
Abstract: Background The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire-Lung Cancer 13 (QLQ-LC13) assesses quality of life (QOL) in patients with lung cancer and was the first EORTC module developed for use in international clinical trials. Since its publication in 1994, major treatment advances with possible effects on QOL have occurred. These changes called for an update of the module and its international psychometric validation. We aimed to investigate the scale structure and psychometric properties of the updated lung cancer module, QLQ-LC29, in patients with lung cancer. Methods This international, observational field study was done in…
Benefits of Statin Therapy Based on Plasma Carbohydrate Antigen 125 Values Following an Admission for Acute Heart Failure
2011
The prognostic benefit of statins in patients with heart failure is a topic of controversy. Under the hypothesis that statins may provide greater benefit in a subgroup of patients with heightened inflammatory activity, we sought to explore whether statins are associated with a decreased risk of long-term mortality in patients with acute heart failure based on elevated levels of carbohydrate antigen 125, a biomarker related to systemic congestion and proinflammatory status. We analysed 1222 consecutive patients admitted with acute heart failure in a single teaching center during a median follow-up of 20 months. carbohydrate antigen 125 was measured during index hospitalization and dichotomize…
Mitochondrial myopathy with lactic acidosis and deficient activity of muscle succinate cytochrome-c-oxidoreductase
1984
A male infant had severe muscular hypotonia from birth. Recurrent vomiting with dehydration and severe metabolic acidosis complicated the course. Elevated lactate (up to 12.3 mmol/l; n less than 2), pyruvate (0.4 mmol/l; n less than 0.05) and alanine levels were found in serum with an abnormal lactate/pyruvate ratio (greater than 30; n less than 15). In urine the concentrations of lactate, pyruvate, alanine and of several intermediates of the citric acid cycle were increased. In muscle, numerous disseminated "ragged red fibres" were found by light microscopy; muscle fibres were found to contain subsarcolemmal aggregates of mitochondria, lipid droplets and glycogen by electromicroscopical me…
Rates and correlates of suicidal ideation among stroke survivors: a meta-Analysis
2017
BACKGROUND: A better understanding of the epidemiological impact of suicidal ideation after stroke is required to identify subjects needing personalised interventions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate rates and correlates of suicidal ideation among stroke survivors. METHODS: We searched via Ovid, Medline, Embase and PsycInfo from database inception until August 2016. Predefined outcomes were (1) rates of suicidal ideation based on random-effects pooled proportion and (2) relevant sociodemographic and clinical correlates, using random-effects odds ratio (OR) or standardised mean difference (SMD) for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. RESULTS: Fifteen …
Medical complications in a telemedicine home care programme for paediatric ventilated patients.
2019
Introduction Advances in paediatric medicine have increased survival rates for patients with severe chronic illnesses, of which the most complex are ventilator-dependent children (VDCs). Although home care improves their quality of life, morbidity and mortality rates are high. Our aim was to study the medical complications (events) that occur at home and assess the usefulness of telemedicine in their detection and treatment. Methods A prospective clinical study (2007–2017) was performed for tracheotomised VDCs. We used a high-density data telemedicine monitoring system from our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and analysed events during the first two years of home care to study how different …
