Multiple point spaces of finite holomorphic maps

2015

We show that there exists a unique possible definition, with certain natural properties, of the multiple point space of a holomorphic map between complex manifolds. Our construction coincides with the double point space and the k-th multiple point space for corank one map-germs, due to Mond. We also give some interesting properties of the double point space and prove that in many cases it can be computed as the zero locus of certain quotient of ideals.

LisRK is required for optimal fitness ofListeria monocytogenesin soil

2020

ABSTRACTListeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen responsible for the disease listeriosis. It is ubiquitously found in the environment and soil is one of its natural habitats. Listeria monocytogenes is highly capable of coping with various stressful conditions. We hypothesized that stress-responsive two-component systems such as LisRK might contribute to the adaptation of L. monocytogenes to the soil environment. Indeed, investigations of the population dynamics of wild-type and mutant strains suggest an important role of LisRK for optimal fitness of L. monocytogenes in sterile soil. Results from non-sterile soil showed that the parental strain was capable of surviving longer than mut…

The effect of genetic robustness on evolvability in digital organisms

2008

Abstract Background Recent work has revealed that many biological systems keep functioning in the face of mutations and therefore can be considered genetically robust. However, several issues related to robustness remain poorly understood, such as its implications for evolvability (the ability to produce adaptive evolutionary innovations). Results Here, we use the Avida digital evolution platform to explore the effects of genetic robustness on evolvability. First, we obtained digital organisms with varying levels of robustness by evolving them under combinations of mutation rates and population sizes previously shown to select for different levels of robustness. Then, we assessed the abilit…

Topical Review: Progress in Desmin-Related Myopathies

2000

Desmin-related myopathies are sporadic and familial neuromuscular conditions of considerable clinical heterogeneity uniformly marked by the pathologic accretion of desmin, often in a filamentous fashion. A large variety of other proteins, some of them cytoskeletal, also accrue. Morphologically, two types may be distinguished, one characterized by inclusions such as cytoplasmic and spheroid bodies or desmin-dystrophin plaques and another marked by granulofilamentous material. The genetic spectrum of desmin-related myopathies is quite diverse in that missense mutations and deletions in the desmin gene and a missense mutation in the α-B crystallin gene have been detected and several genes on o…

Insights on Kawasaki disease and multisystem inflammatory syndrome: relationship with COVID-19 infection.

2021

At the beginning of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) children seemed to be less affected and with milder symptoms than adults. Afterward, however, a warning was released regarding the possible association between COVID-19 and Kawasaki disease (KD) or Kawasaki-like disease. Thereafter, labels of Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome Temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS) in Europe and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) in the USA were coined to refer to this new disease entity. The reality is that PIMS-TS/MIS-C resembles certain KD complications such as toxic shock syndrome and macrophage activation syndrome than to classic KD. PIMS-TS/MIS-C and KD share…

Congenital Myopathies in the New Millennium

2005

Few medical disciplines have benefited so enormously from the molecular revolution as myology. Whereas the congenital myopathies have flourished from enzyme histochemistry and electron microscopy, defining individual congenital myopathies by structural abnormalities, genetic research has only recently focused on congenital myopathies. However, a number of congenital myopathies have been molecularly elucidated: central and multiminicore diseases, nemaline myopathy, myotubular myopathy, and congenital myopathy marked by aggregation of proteins, giving rise to the concept of protein aggregate myopathies, to which now desminopathies, α-B crystallinopathies, selenoproteinopathy, myotilinopathy,…

Multifunctionality: Epistemic diversity and concept oriented research clusters

2008

International audience; This paper provides a mapping of the different uses of the word multifunctionality. To explore the diversity of meanings and interpretations, a comparative analysis was conducted through five national case studies in France, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Switzerland. The analysis conducted at national level makes it possible to identify eight Concept Oriented Research Clusters (CORCs), based on a relative homogeneity in the research practices, in the research questions addressed, in the concepts used or discussed by scientists to lead their work and in the scientific disciplines, the stream of thought or possibly the epistemic community researchers belong to.
