Pressure Retarded Osmosis: a Membrane Process for Environmental Sustainability

2016

Salinity Gradient Power (SGP) based on the controlled mixing between two solutions at different salinities is a viable alternative to produce power from renewable sources. Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO) is one of the most promising technologies proposed so far for the exploitation of such energy source. Apart from the typical source of salinity gradients, namely river water and seawater, more and more interest has been raised recently towards the use of non-conventional saline solutions. In this work, water originating from a sewage treatment plant is used as the dilute solution (feed solution), while brine exiting from a desalination plant is used as the concentrate (draw solution), thus …

Transformando las prácticas de evaluación en las agencias de innovación para fomentar transiciones hacia la sostenibilidad

2019

The aim of the study is to identify different styles and practices for evaluation of innovation policies based on different orientations, focusing on the case of the paradigm of transformative change to foster transitions towards sustainability, and the problems associated with its application. The study is exploratory, and it uses public funding agencies for innovation as strategic research settings. Based on the information provided by the experience of an international consortium participated by funding agencies from different countries, the main concepts and problems presented in the theoretical debate are illustrated. Finally, the main contributions of the study to the theory and pract…

This brief essay recalls, in the one hundred years of the publication of the “Legal order” of Santi Romano, the strong links between the great scholar and the school of public law of the University of Palermo, founded by Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, who accompanied the first steps in legal education and scientific research.

Muscle and bone mass in middle‐aged women : role of menopausal status and physical activity

2020

Background. Women experience drastic hormonal changes during midlife due to the menopausal transition. Menopausal hormonal changes are known to lead to bone loss and potentially also to loss of lean mass. The loss of muscle and bone tissue coincide due to the functional relationship and interaction between these tissues. If and how physical activity counteracts deterioration in muscle and bone during the menopausal transition remains partly unresolved. This study investigated differences between premenopausal, early perimenopausal, late perimenopausal, and postmenopausal women in appendicular lean mass (ALM), appendicular lean mass index (ALMI), femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) and T…

A Learning Automata Based Solution to Service Selection in Stochastic Environments

2010

Published version of a paper published in the book: Trends in Applied Intelligent Systems. Also available on SpringerLink: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-13033-5_22 With the abundance of services available in today’s world, identifying those of high quality is becoming increasingly difficult. Reputation systems can offer generic recommendations by aggregating user provided opinions about service quality, however, are prone to ballot stuffing and badmouthing . In general, unfair ratings may degrade the trustworthiness of reputation systems, and changes in service quality over time render previous ratings unreliable. In this paper, we provide a novel solution to the above problems based …

Solving Non-Stationary Bandit Problems by Random Sampling from Sibling Kalman Filters

2010

Published version of an article from Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Also available at SpringerLink: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-13033-5_21 The multi-armed bandit problem is a classical optimization problem where an agent sequentially pulls one of multiple arms attached to a gambling machine, with each pull resulting in a random reward. The reward distributions are unknown, and thus, one must balance between exploiting existing knowledge about the arms, and obtaining new information. Dynamically changing (non-stationary) bandit problems are particularly challenging because each change of the reward distributions may progressively degrade the performance of any fixed strategy. Alt…

Healthy lifestyles and academic success in a sample of Italian university students

2019

Scientific literature has shown that healthy lifestyles are implicated both in the risk reduction of several disorders and in the improvement of cognitive functions. The present study evaluated the association between lifestyle behaviors and academic performance in university students from twelve different degree courses at the University of Palermo, Italy. It was hypothesized that healthy lifestyles, measured as the practice of a good diet, satisfying quality of sleep, low-stress levels, perceived social support, abstention from the use of illegal drugs, non-problematic Internet use, and regular sports habits, were associated to academic success. A total of 466 students were surveyed (26.5…
