2012
Master thesis in development management- University of Agder, 2012 This study set out to understand and assess internet and mobile phone uses among the urban poor in Kawempe division in Kampala district, Uganda. As the internet and mobile phones are rapidly diffusing through communities with more people having access to them, it is important to understand what people are actually doing with their access. There has been so much optimism and scepticism among scholars around the potential of ICTs in facilitating both economic and social development. This study thus seeks to build on the knowledge of how ordinary internet and mobile phone usage may influence social and economic development. Hav…

2012
Master thesis in development management- University of Agder 2012 Activity in the cultural industries accounts for a great deal of the global GDP. The role of cultural industries in a development context has gained much attention during the past decades. International bodies like UNESCO are especially emphasizing the importance of the cultural industries, as they have the potential of generating employment and welfare – but also because cultural expression and activity is something of intrinsic value and essential for human development beyond economic terms; it defines who we are and conveys existential attributes such as identity, heritage and meaning. This paper seeks to investigate certa…

2010
Masteroppgave development management- Universitetet i Agder 2010 A prerequisite for achievement of sustainable development is economical growth (NorwegianGovernment, 2008-2009). Today an increasing number of corporations in the Western world implement the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) (NorwegianEmbassyMexico, 2010a; NorwegianGovernment, 2008-2009). Accountability theories suggests that CSR initiatives increases transparency and accountability of a company, which again increases its legitimacy (Bendell, 2000; Utting, 2005). 2012
Master thesis in development management- University of Agder, 2012 The complex nature of urban poverty cannot be grasped by numbers and graphs. Urban poor survival strategies are subject to a number of challenges, derived from internal and external risks. Domestic illness or global economic fluctuations can have a severe impact on the livelihoods of the urban poor depending on day-to-day income. A contemporary trend within poverty research is to analyse urban vulnerability through a bottom-up approach, giving a voice to the poor. In order to enhance the prospects of poverty eradication strategies in a globalised world, there is a need to approach urban poverty as a contextual phenomenon, id…
Investigating the relationship between poverty and disease : the case of Guinea Worm in the Savelugu-Nanton district of the northern region of Ghana
2010
Masteroppgave i development management- Universitetet i Agder 2010 The relationship between poverty and disease is complex and is often difficult to explore. The situation is exacerbated when investigating different aspects of this relationship and including concepts such as sustainable development into the equation. Varying methods have also been employed in past research when examining this relationship. Quantitative methods often give a vivid but superficial picture to the relationship, whilst a qualititative method often leads to difficulties in extrapolating this relationship to other contexts. In the research, I employed a mixed research strategy employing both quantitative and qualit…

Master thesis in development management- University of Agder, 2012 The emphasis on fostering state-community synergy for improving human well-being and sustainable development has been recognized in development circles and especially in Third World countries. This recognition is apparent to solve social as well as developmental problems. In the past thirty years, conflict has been a major challenge for the development process of Sri Lanka. Not only for the North and East, the conflict affected the entire country in several ways. Sustainable Development is the most important requirement to any country today. Assessing the impact of state-civil society synergy for sustainable natural resource management: the case of Bobiri Forest Ghana
2012
Master thesis in development management- University of Agder, 2012 The emphasis on fostering state-civil society synergy for improving human well-being and sustainable development has been recognized in development circles and especially in Third World countries. This recognition to some extent has its roots from the past failures of the state (governments) alone tackling and initiating affairs as a lead development agency to deliver the needed development through its institutions, agencies, sectors and departments (Bruce, 1994). Unfortunately such situations usually sideline the energies of the society needed to complement state efforts to promote good governance and improvement in human w…
Urban management and sustainable development : the case of the squatting and street trading population of Kumasi
2009
Masteroppgave i development management- Universitetet i Agder 2009 The single most important tool for dealing with the challenges that urbanisation presents, especially for cities in developing countries, is management or governance. Urbanisation presents towns and cities and the people who inhabit them with a lot of challenges not ever seen before in human history. Sad to note however, cities in developing countries do not seem to be able to take advantage of these opportunities. They have had to contend with so many challenges that it makes it very difficult for them to seize fully the opportunities that urbanisation presents. Such problems as filth, overcrowding, lack of employment, high…

2011
Master thesis in development management- University of Agder 2011 Sustainable development has become a catch phrase in almost all global development agendas. With more than 60% of Africa’s active labour force earning a livelihood in the agricultural sector (World Bank 2011; UNEP 2007), progress in the agricultural sector is prioritized as key to attainment of sustainable development for different countries in Africa. This study considered how a state-authored plan to transform the majorly subsistence agriculture into commercial agriculture, was being implemented in five parishes of Nakisunga Sub-County in Mukono, district of Uganda. This largely qualitative study involved interviewing farme…
