Equivalence Testing With Particle Size Distribution Data: Methods and Applications in the Development of Inhalative Drugs

2017

ABSTRACTKey criteria of the quality of inhalative drugs are assessed in experiments generating so-called particle size distributions as data. Many experiments of that kind are carried out to demonstrate that necessary modifications to whatever part of the manufacturing process do not substantially change basic characteristics of an inhalable drug product. The equivalence testing procedures we derive for that purpose rely on different models accommodating the specific structure of such data and on different ways of specifying the region of nonrelevant differences. For each hypotheses formulation, three different tests are derived (two parametric and one asymptotically distribution-free proce…

Mapping accretion and its variability in the young open cluster NGC 2264: A study based on u-band photometry

2014

We aim at characterizing the accretion properties of several hundred members of the star-forming cluster NGC 2264 (3 Myr). We performed a deep u,g,r,i mapping and a simultaneous u+r monitoring of the region with CFHT/MegaCam in order to directly probe the accretion process from UV excess measurements. Photometric properties and stellar parameters are determined homogeneously for about 750 monitored young objects, spanning the mass range 0.1-2 Mo. About 40% are classical (accreting) T Tauri stars, based on various diagnostics (H_alpha, UV and IR excesses). The remaining non-accreting members define the (photospheric+chromospheric) reference UV emission level over which flux excess is detecte…

MRgFUS results Italy

2017

PURPOSE: To present our preliminary results achieved with the first Italian installation of a trans-cranial MRI-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (tcMRgFUS) certified system for functional neurosurgery. Moreover, to our knowledge, this is the world-first tcMRgFUS system ever installed on a 1.5T MRI unit. Technical issues faced to achieve a safe and effective treatment will be discussed focusing on MR high-resolution live imaging and thermometry sequences optimization. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Patient enrollment was based on indication for functional neurosurgery and evidence of medication-refractory disease; a detailed medical history has been collected together with a complete clinical examin…

Effect of self-assembled surfactant structures on ion transport across the liquid|liquid interface

1999

In this paper, the effect of a coadsorbed polyanion–cationic surfactant system on the transport of tetraethylammonium ion across the water|1,2-dichloroethane interface is studied. It is shown that the change in double-layer structure due to the presence of adsorbed or coadsorbed surfactant can explain the experimental observations, thus concluding that no other effects on ion transfer (e.g., steric hindrance) are relevant under these experimental conditions. The implications of these results are discussed. Keywords: ITIES, Ion transfer, Self-assembled monolayers, Surfactants, Double-layer effects

Work-related stress of elementary school principals in Finland: Coping strategies and support

2021

The present study aimed to investigate elementary school principals’ self-reported causes of work-related stress, their coping strategies to deal with stress and the support they need for their leadership. Seventy-six principals filled in the questionnaire, which included open-ended questions. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the data. The results showed that the main sources of stress were workload, interpersonal conflicts, a lack of resources and internal pressures. Moreover, principals used emotion-focused, problem-focused and social coping to deal with stress. Additionally, principals reported a need for problem-focused support and social support for their leadership. T…

Machine Learning: An Overview and Applications in Pharmacogenetics.

2021

This narrative review aims to provide an overview of the main Machine Learning (ML) techniques and their applications in pharmacogenetics (such as antidepressant, anti-cancer and warfarin drugs) over the past 10 years. ML deals with the study, the design and the development of algorithms that give computers capability to learn without being explicitly programmed. ML is a sub-field of artificial intelligence, and to date, it has demonstrated satisfactory performance on a wide range of tasks in biomedicine. According to the final goal, ML can be defined as Supervised (SML) or as Unsupervised (UML). SML techniques are applied when prediction is the focus of the research. On the other hand, UML…
