Motion perception in early glaucoma
2013
Purpose: The aim of our study was to underline the changes in the movement perception for early glaucoma. Our working hypothesis consisted in inquiring if the impairment of the magnocellular pathway may modify the movement perception capabilities in the visual field, more particularly in its peripheral area. Methods: We included 14 healthy subjects and 14 patients with early primary open angle glaucoma. A moving target was presented on a semicircular screen (1.8 m diameter); participants were asked to localize the Ending Point (EP) of each movement. Each stimulus consisted in a white dot (0,72° of diameter) moving horizontally with the imposed velocity profile. Two different laws of motion w…
Experimental Validation of Maximum Constant Boost Control and Switching Frequency Optimal for three-phase Quasi-Z-Source Converters
2020
This paper presents a modified modulation scheme for quasi-Z-Source converters, based on the Maximum Constant Boost Control (MCBC) concept and Switching Frequency Optimal (SFO) as reference signal. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is validated by comparing the obtained results (in terms of AC harmonic content and voltage stress) with those carried out from traditional modulation schemes. For this reason, a test bench has been assembled and the benefits of the SFO MCBC modulation scheme have been valuated.
Empathy, Entrainment, and Perceived Interaction in Complex Dyadic Dance Movement
2019
The current study explores how individuals' tendency to empathize with others (trait empathy) modulates interaction and social entrainment in dyadic dance in a free movement context using perceptual and computationally derived measures. Stimuli consisting of 24 point-light animations were created using motion capture data selected from a sample of 99 dyads, based on self-reported trait empathy. Individuals whose Empathy Quotient (EQ) scores were in the top or bottom quartile of all scores were considered to have high or low empathy, respectively, and twelve dyads comprised of four high-high, four low-low, and four high-low empathy combinations were identified. Animations of these dyads were…
Who Controls Who? Embodied Control Within Human–Technology Choreographies
2017
In this article we explore issues of embodied control that relate to current and future technologies in which body movements function as an instrument of control. Instead of just seeing ourselves in control, it is time to consider how these technologies actually control our moving bodies and transform our lived spaces. By shifting the focus from devices to choreographies among devices, we perform a theoretical analysis of the multidimensional aspects that reside within embodied interaction with technology. We suggest that it is beneficial to acknowledge and reformulate the phenomena of embodied control that go beyond the instrumental user-to-device control scheme. Drawing upon the phenomeno…

Prescription opioid use and employment : A nationwide Finnish register study
2021
Background: The secular decline in labor market participation and the concurrent increase in opioid use in many developed countries have sparked a policy debate on the possible connection between these two trends. We examined whether the use of prescription opioids was connected to labor market outcomes relating to participation, employment and unemployment among the Finnish population. Methods: The working-age population (aged 19–64 years) living in Finland during the period 1995–2016 was used in the analyses (consisting of 67 903 701 person-year observations). Lagged values of prescription opioid use per capita were used as the exposure. Instrumental variables (IV) estimation method was u…
H&E Multi-Laboratory Staining Variance Exploration with Machine Learning
2022
In diagnostic histopathology, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining is a critical process that highlights salient histological features. Staining results vary between laboratories regardless of the histopathological task, although the method does not change. This variance can impair the accuracy of algorithms and histopathologists’ time-to-insight. Investigating this variance can help calibrate stain normalization tasks to reverse this negative potential. With machine learning, this study evaluated the staining variance between different laboratories on three tissue types. We received H&E-stained slides from 66 different laboratories. Each slide contained kidney, skin, and colon tissue sampl…
ABC saimes gēnu ekspresija un vēža cilmes šūnu fenotipiskās izpausmes pret doksorubicīnu rezistentā MDA-MB-231 apakšpopulācijā
2018
Rezistence pret citotoksiskiem ķīmijterapijas savienojumiem ir nozīmīga problēma vēža ārstēšanā, kam raksturīga audzēja atjaunošanās un slimības progresēšana. Rezistenci pret ķīmijterapijas savienojumiem var veidot dažādi šūnu mehānismi, no kuriem visplašāk aprakstīta ATF saistošās kasetes (ABC) transportproteīnu pārekspresija. Rezistenci visbiežāk veicina pret ķīmijterapijas savienojumiem rezistentu apakšpopulāciju selekcija. Vēža cilmes šūnām (VCŠ) piemīt spēja izvairīties no ķīmijterapijas ietekmes un atjaunot audzēja šūnu populāciju. Darba mērķis bija noteikt ABC saimes gēnu ekspresiju un raksturot VCŠ raksturīgās pazīmes pret doksorubicīnu rezistentā trīskārši negatīva krūts vēža šūnu …
Alternative analysis of transient infiltration experiment to estimate soil water repellency
2019
The repellency index (RI) defined as the adjusted ratio between soil‐ethanol, Se, and soil‐water, Sw, sorptivities estimated from minidisk infiltrometer experiments has been used instead of the widely used water drop penetration time and molarity of ethanol drop tests to assess soil water repellency. However, sorptivity calculated by the usual early‐time infiltration equation may be overestimated as the effects of gravity and lateral capillary are neglected. With the aim to establish the best applicative procedure to assess RI, different approaches to estimate Se and Sw were compared that make use of both the early‐time infiltration equation (namely, the 1 min, S1, and the short‐time linear…
The Effect of Electrolytic Solution Composition on the Structure, Corrosion, and Wear Resistance of PEO Coatings on AZ31 Magnesium Alloy
2020
Plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings were prepared in aluminate, phosphate, and silicate-based electrolytic solutions using a soft-sparking regime in a multi-frequency stepped process to compare the structure, corrosion, and wear characteristics of the obtained coatings on AZ31 magnesium alloy. The XRD results indicated that all coatings consist of MgO and MgF2, while specific products such as Mg2SiO4, MgSiO3, Mg2P2O7, and MgAl2O4 were also present in specimens based on the selected solution. Surface morphology of the obtained coatings was strongly affected by the electrolyte composition. Aluminate-containing coating showed volcano-like, nodular particles and craters distributed over the …
