Experimental Set up of Advanced Lighting Systems for Load Shifting Strategies

2021

Shiftable and modulable loads are an essential part of smart grids in the effort for improving the efficiency of the power system and providing new ancillary services. Most of the researches considered shiftable loads and the impact on the power grid. Smart lighting systems are able to modulate their consumption while preserving the visual duty, therefore they can take part to this action. In this context, this paper presents an advanced experimental setup implemented in the SolarLab of the University of Palermo, with the aim of studying the impact on the end-user's energy consumption and on the power grid of smart lighting systems. In this light, different control strategies will be consid…

Fuel Cell in configurazione Range Extender

2005

Smart rules for smart cities- Managing efficient cities in euromediterrenean countries

2014

Modern cities require new and different codes, taking into account environmental and energy issues, pillars of the contemporary urban development. The existing urban communities are highly energy consuming systems, strongly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Contemporary cities cannot be thought of and defined as static systems, as they were in the past, with a few urban functions. ‘The Church, the square and the court, the marketplace and the government palace were in the past the places where the urban functions were taking place’ (E. Salzano ). Today, the reference frame has changed even due to the demographic increase more and more concentrated in the cities that are now large co…

A SURVEY ON SMART GRIDS ACTIONS AND COMPONENTS FOR ENERGY CONSUMPTIONS OPTIMIZATION

2014

In the paper a survey on the features that a smart grid has to perform for energy consumptions optimization are presented and explained. By optimizing the loads usage with the grid priorities both end-users and the energy providers can save energy (and so CO2 emissions) and money. In the paper the conceive of an architecture in-home and at residential level is proposed to arrange a smart grid with its intelligent and connected load consumers. Qualitative results from the European research project “BeyWatch” are here mentioned in order to explain how the conceived main services in smart grid, like monitoring and control services, energy management services and load management services allow …

Energy Management System in Grid-Connected Small Scale AC/DC Microgrids Including Renewable Sources and Flexible Loads

2022

The growth of small scale microgrids with diverse distributed generations has drawn attention to their effective energy management. In this paper, for various energy scenarios, an energy management system is adopted to minimize the energy purchased by a hybrid AC/DC microgrid from the upstream grid due to high peak-hour energy prices and maximise generation from renewable sources, while adjusting the most optimal charge/discharge control strategies for flexible loads such as electric vehicles and storage systems, and the supply of non-controllable loads. In addition, peak shaving is simultaneously implemented in this proposed model without considering minimum power deviation as an objective…

Grid-Forming Converters in Weak Grids – The Case of a Mediterranean Island

2019

The existing power network of a Mediterranean island is used as test bed for the study of grid-forming converter dynamics in weak grid conditions. The control scheme adopted for the converter falls in the category of the so called virtual synchronous machines (VSM). Particular attention is committed to the interaction between the converter controls and the synchronous machines dynamics. Time delays typically associated to measurements and filters are considered in the study, and included in the system model with a specific mathematical approach. Time-domain simulations show the occurrence of oscillatory instability in the system, with VSM and synchronous machines swinging against each other…

A Technical Approach to the Energy Blockchain in Microgrids

2018

The present paper considers some technical issues related to the “energy blockchain” paradigm applied to microgrids. In particular, what appears from the study is that the superposition of energy transactions in a microgrid creates a variation of the power losses in all the branches of the microgrid. Traditional power losses allocation in distribution systems takes into account only generators while, in this paper, a real-time attribution of power losses to each transaction involving one generator and one load node is done by defining some suitable indices. Besides, the presence of P–V nodes increases the level of reactive flows and provides a more complex technical perspective. For this re…

Past and present “Urban voids” as resources for the future. The case-study of Catania

2002

Since the end of the 1960s, the landscapes of major cities have been more and more characterized by the presence of "urban voids". Today these "voids", which are often heterogeneous in their manifestation, dominate the discussions about the transformation and the future of urban areas. The reclaiming and re-use of derelict sites and "cultural heritage" has the duty to assure for the next generation the knowledge of the cultural values of the past. In this paper we will focus our attention on a re-used "cultural heritage": the Multifunctional Centre of Catania (Sicily, Objective 1 region). Thanks to the Urban Programme this "urban void"- abandoned for decades and deteriorated - was recovered…
