Cooperation and cultural transmission in a coordination game

2009

Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze if cooperation can be the product of cultural evolution in a two-stage coordination game, consisting of a production stage followed by a negotiation phase. We present an overlapping generations model with cultural transmission of preferences where the distribution of preferences in the population and the strategies are determined endogenously and simultaneously. There are several groups in the society; some of them play cooperatively and others do not. Socialization takes place inside the group, but there is a positive rate of migration among groups which parents anticipate. Our main result shows that all groups converge to the cooperative equili…

The long-term consequences of the global 1918 influenza pandemic: A systematic analysis of 117 IPUMS international census data sets

2017

Several country-level studies, including a prominent one for the United States, have identified long-term effects of in-utero exposure to the 1918 influenza pandemic (also known as the Spanish Flu) on economic outcomes in adulthood. In-utero conditions are theoretically linked to adult health and socioeconomic status through the fetal origins or Barker hypothesis. Historical exposure to the Spanish Flu provides a natural experiment to test this hypothesis. Although the Spanish Flu was a global phenomenon, with around 500 million people infected worldwide, there exists no comprehensive global study on its long-term economic effects. We attempt to close this gap by systematically analyzing 11…

The Energy Market Impact of Climate Change on Electricity Generation in Europe

2018

In this paper, the policy trend in Europe towards the emission reduction target in the energy sector, as planned from the Paris Agreement, is analyzed. Although renewable energy sources are improving their share, the large use of coal as primary fuel and the uncertainty about nuclear production makes the transition hard. It's well known that future emission patterns from energy generation influence the climate change trend, but as shown in the following, there is also a reverse interrelation, due to the different environmental conditions caused by climate change affecting all generation technologies. Furthermore, energy prices, which derive from this changed framework likewise will influenc…

2N+1 highest amplitude of the modulus of the N-th order AP breather and other 2N-2 parameters solutions to the NLS equation

2015

We construct here new deformations of the AP breather (Akhmediev-Peregrine breather) of order N (or AP N breather) with 2N −2 real parameters. Other families of quasi-rational solutions of the NLS equation are obtained. We evaluate the highest amplitude of the modulus of AP breather of order N ; we give the proof that the highest amplitude of the AP N breather is equal to 2N + 1. We get new formulas for the solutions of the NLS equation, different from these already given in previous works. New solutions for the order 8 and their deformations according to the parameters are explicitly given. We get the triangular configurations as well as isolated rings at the same time. Moreover, the appea…

Families of solutions to the CKP equation with multi-parameters

2020

We construct solutions to the CKP (cylindrical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili)) equation in terms of Fredholm determinants. We deduce solutions written as a quotient of wronskians of order 2N. These solutions are called solutions of order N ; they depend on 2N − 1 parameters. They can be written as a quotient of 2 polynomials of degree 2N (N + 1) in x, t and 4N (N + 1) in y depending on 2N − 2 parameters. We explicitly construct the expressions up to order 5 and we study the patterns of their modulus in plane (x, y) and their evolution according to time and parameters.

A Comparison of Special Bonding Techniques for Transmission and Distribution Cables under Normal and Fault Conditions

2021

In this article, a review of the existing special bonding techniques for medium voltage and high-voltage cables is presented. Special bonding techniques have the purpose of reducing sheath currents, thereby limiting copper losses and the reduction of the ampacity of cables. The literature review shows various bonding techniques and how these have evolved over the years thanks to new technologies. Simulations of each technique are performed in MATLAB/Simulink, to compare their strengths and drawbacks both under normal conditions and in the presence of a single-line-to-ground fault.

Navigating the care between two distinct cultures: a qualitative study of the experiences of Arabic-speaking immigrants in Norwegian hospitals

2021

Abstract Background During the past decades, there has been an increase in the number of immigrants to European and Scandinavian countries. This has challenged the health-care systems, which cater to the needs of patients despite their cultural and linguistic barriers, in these countries. Most studies on this topic have focused on the perspectives of health-care providers in delivering their service. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how hospitalized Arabic-speaking patients experienced their interaction with the Norwegian health-care system. Methods In-depth interviews with 20 participants and researcher’s participant observation were conducted to explore the idiosyncrat…

A quantitative analysis of Educational Data through the Comparison between Hierarchical and Not-Hierarchical Clustering

2017

Many research papers have studied the problem of taking a set of data and separating it into subgroups through the methods of Cluster Analysis. However, the variables and parameters involved in Cluster Analysis have not always been outlined and criticized, especially in the field of Science Education. Moreover, in the field of Science Education, a comparison between two different Clustering methods is not discussed in the literature. Conceptions of students about modeling in physic are investigated by using an open-ended questionnaire. The questionnaire is analyzed through Clustering methods. The clustering results obtained by using the two methods are compared and show a good coherence bet…

Upstream Product Market Regulations, ICT, R&D and Productivity

2017

Our study aims to assess the actual importance of the two main channels via which upstream anti-competitive sector regulations are usually considered to impact productivity growth, i.e. by acting as a disincentive to business investments in R&D and in ICT. We estimate the specific impacts of these two channels and their shares in the total impact as opposed to alternative channels of investments in other forms of intangible capital that we cannot explicitly consider for lack of appropriate data such as improvements in skills, management and organization. To achieve this, we specify an extended production function explicitly relating productivity to R&D and ICT capital as well as to upstream…
