Exact Fourier expansion in cylindrical coordinates for the three-dimensional Helmholtz Green function
2009
A new method is presented for Fourier decomposition of the Helmholtz Green Function in cylindrical coordinates, which is equivalent to obtaining the solution of the Helmholtz equation for a general ring source. The Fourier coefficients of the Helmholtz Green function are split into their half advanced+half retarded and half advanced-half retarded components. Closed form solutions are given for these components in terms of a Horn function and a Kampe de Feriet function, respectively. The systems of partial differential equations associated with these two-dimensional hypergeometric functions are used to construct a fourth-order ordinary differential equation which both components satisfy. A s…

Inattention and Uncertainty in the Predictive Brain
2021
Negative effects of inattention on task performance can be seen in many contexts of society and human behavior, such as traffic, work, and sports. In traffic, inattention is one of the most frequently cited causal factors in accidents. In order to identify inattention and mitigate its negative effects, there is a need for quantifying attentional demands of dynamic tasks, with a credible basis in cognitive modeling and neuroscience. Recent developments in cognitive science have led to theories of cognition suggesting that brains are an advanced prediction engine. The function of this prediction engine is to support perception and action by continuously matching incoming sensory input with to…
STABILITY OF A STOCHASTICALLY PERTURBED MODEL OF INTRACELLULAR SINGLE-STRANDED RNA VIRUS REPLICATION
2019
Compared to the replication of double-stranded RNA and DNA viruses, the replication of single-stranded viruses requires the production of a number of intermediate strands that serve as templates for the synthesis of genomic-sense strands. Two theoretical extreme mechanisms for replication for such single-stranded viruses have been proposed; one extreme being represented by the so-called linear stamping machine and the opposite extreme by the exponential growth. Of course, real systems are more complex and examples have been described in which a combination of such extreme mechanisms can also occur: a fraction of the produced progeny resulting from a stamping-machine type of replication that…

Right Restriction or Restricting Rights? The UK Acts to Address COVID-19
2020
The UK was initially slow to adopt measures to address the COVID-19 pandemic. However on 23 March 2020 and following escalating infection and mortality rates, the government introduced the most restrictive measures on movement in modern UK history. These lockdown measures which introduced sweeping limitation on movement outside the home were introduced through statutory legislation: regulations which were made by the government and not debated nor legislated by Parliament. This article considers the issues the UK?s legal responses to address the COVID-19 raises in terms of democracy, human rights and the rule of law
