Redundant Picard–Fuchs System for Abelian Integrals

2001

We derive an explicit system of Picard-Fuchs differential equations satisfied by Abelian integrals of monomial forms and majorize its coefficients. A peculiar feature of this construction is that the system admitting such explicit majorants, appears only in dimension approximately two times greater than the standard Picard-Fuchs system. The result is used to obtain a partial solution to the tangential Hilbert 16th problem. We establish upper bounds for the number of zeros of arbitrary Abelian integrals on a positive distance from the critical locus. Under the additional assumption that the critical values of the Hamiltonian are distant from each other (after a proper normalization), we were…

Phenomenological approach to compare the crystallization kinetics of isotactic polypropylene and polyamide-6 under pressure

2001

Reliable experimental data for semicrystalline polymers crystallized under pressure are supplied on the basis of a model experiment in which drastic solidification conditions are applied. The influence of the pressure and cooling rate on some properties, such as the density and microhardness, and on the product morphology, as investigated with wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), is stressed. Results for isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples display a lower density and a lower microhardness with increasing pressure over a wide range of cooling rates (from 0.01 to 20 °C/s). Polyamide-6 (PA6) samples exhibit the opposite behavior, with the density and microhardness increasing at higher pressur…

Preparation of polymeric foams with a pore size gradient via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS)

2015

Abstract Foams with a pore size gradient are promising materials for tissue engineering applications where a complex architecture involving morphological variations in space must be mimicked, e.g. in bone tissue repair. In this paper, a technique to obtain a porous scaffold with a pore size gradient is presented. The preparation procedure is based on Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS), by imposing a different thermal history on the two sides of a polymeric solution. In this way, a gradient in thermal history is produced, which will generate a pore size monotonously varying along scaffold thickness. By controlling some parameters easy to manipulate, such as demixing temperature and/or…

Modelling of thrombus formation using smoothed particle hydrodynamics method

2023

In this paper a novel model, based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, is proposed to simulate thrombus formation. This describes the main phases of the coagulative cascade through the balance of four biochemical species and three type of platelets. SPH particles can switch from fluid to solid phase when specific biochemical and physical conditions are satisfied. The interaction between blood and the forming blood clot is easily handled by an innovative monolithic FSI approach. Fluid-solid coupling is modelled by introducing elastic binds between solid particles, without requiring detention and management of the interface between the two media. The proposed model is able to…

What Can International Finance Add to International Strategy?

2011

This chapter focuses on the role of corporate financial strategies to improve firms’ market valuations, and thus lower their cost of capital. The identification of successful strategies is accomplished within an overall strategic framework and related to how the firm perceives the degree of international financial integration. Five strategies for how to break out of a segmented, thin domestic capital market are highlighted together with historical success cases. The chapter illustrates the linkages between business strategy, firm motivation, and various financial strategies. JEL: F21, F23, F36, G32, G34.

The burden of previous fractures in hip fracture patients. The Break Study

2011

A positive history of fractures in older patients with hip fracture is common. We determined the risk factors associated with a positive history of fractures and the profile of care in hip fracture patients. In the Break Study, we enrolled 1249 women aged ≥60 years, seeking care for a hip fracture. Baseline information included age, body mass index, lifestyle (smoking habit, alcohol consumption), patient's history of fracture after the age of 50 years, family history of fragility fracture and health status (presence of comorbidity, use of specific drugs, pre-fracture walking ability, type of fracture, time to surgery, type of surgery, osteoporosis treatment). In the multivariable model age,…

Bcr-Abl kinase promotes cell cycle entry of primary myeloid CML cells in the absence of growth factors

1998

Cell cycle control of both immature and differentiated primary myeloid normal and chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) cells to growth factor deprivation was studied. CD34+ cells were cultured in liquid culture. After removal of growth factors for 48 h normal cells were very efficiently arrested with the fraction of cells in S phase reduced by 70.8 +/- 6.5% in CD34+ and 50.5 +/- 4.2% in CD34- cells. In contrast, a significantly higher proportion of leukaemic cells remained in S phase. The fraction of S-phase cells was reduced by only 29.3 +/- 5.7% in CD34+ CML cells and 21.2 +/- 3.8% in CD34- cells. This abnormal negative cell cycle control in leukaemic cells was specific for growt…

Signalling through TLR2/MyD88 induces differentiation of murine bone marrow stem and progenitor cells to functional phagocytes in response to Candida…

2009

Summary We have previously demonstrated that inactivated yeasts and hyphae of Candida albicans induce in vitro the proliferation of murine haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs, sorted as LKS cells: Lin - c-Kit + Sca-1 + ) as well as their differentia- tion to lineage-positive cells, through a MyD88- dependent pathway. In this work, we have found that this process is mainly mediated by TLR2, and that expanding cells express myeloid and not lym- phoid markers. Incubation of long-term repopulat- ing HSCs (Lin - CD105 + and Sca-1 + ) with C. albicans yeasts resulted in their proliferation and up regu- lation of the common myeloid progenitors (CMPs) markers, CD34 and FcgRII/III, by a …

The Role of Modified Expansion Sphincter Pharyngoplasty in Multilevel Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome Surgery

2017

Introduction Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep disorder caused by an excessive narrowing of the pharyngeal airway that also collapses during inspiration, with an important role played by the lateral pharyngeal wall in the development of the obstruction. Objective To describe our surgical experience with modified expansion sphincter pharyngoplasty (MESP) in the management of lateral collapse in upper airway multilevel surgery. Methods A total of 20 patients with moderate to severe OSAS were recruited in the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department of the University of Palermo, Italy. All of the enrolled patients refused the ventilatory therapy. The subjects were evaluated for …
