How do airlines preferences about engines influence the competition in the commercial aircraft industry: an empirical analysis
2011
This paper examines the competitive context in the commercial aircraft industry. In particular, the aim of the research here presented is to understand what are the main drivers influencing the choice of a specific engine manufacturer in an aircraft, and how such preferences influence the competition between Airbus and Boeing. In order to do that, we have collected data about the fleet composition of the top 25 airlines and we have located the main drivers influencing the engine configuration in: route specialization, business model and maintenance policy. Implications of such empirical findings in the competition among aircraft manufacturers are finally discussed.
WHY CORPORATES INVEST IN THE SAME START-UP AN EXPLORATIVE ANALYSIS OF CVC SYNDICATIONS
2016
This study investigates why two or more corporates co-invest in the same start-up syndicating their CVC activities. Based on two strands of literature, the CVC and the alliance, we propose a research framework that explores the possible antecedents of CVC syndications. Particularly, grounded on alliance literature, we look at the CVC syndication by combining two dimensions, relational and technological: the relational dimension describes the competitive or cooperative nature of the relationship between partners of CVC syndications, while the technological one represents the exploitative or explorative technological objectives that corporates could pursue when coinvesting in a start-up. We a…
Does diversification pay in the app market? Evidence from Apple's App Store and Google Play
2016
In this paper we address the study of the effects of product line diversification on firm performance in the mobile application market. Specifically, we shed light on whether the distribution platform ecosystem where developers commercialize their apps influence the effect of product line diversification, i.e., diversification across different app categories, on developer sales performance. To these purposes, we compare the sales performance of diversified developers with that of category-specialized developers in the two major app stores (namely, Apple’s App Store and Google Play). Our results show that the diversification strategy has a positive impact on developer sales in Google Play, w…
The Nexus Knowledge-Market and Innovation in University Education: Lessons Learned from University Start Ups
2013
The pace of evolution of the university education lags behind the changes in the labour market and it is necessary to accelerate the innovation in the University education to prepare young people to face a new world order. An empirical search among a relevant sample of the start ups of the University of Palermo has been carried out in order to identify possible guidelines for the innovation of several curricula. The authors selected the founders of the new companies as privileged witnesses of the connection between knowledge and market due to their experience gained in commercialize knowledge acquired through their university education. The empirical search pointed out several regularities,…

Modulate research effort in inbound alliance
2014
We address the R&D supply chain where a customer wants to sign an R&D contract with a supplier in an inbound open innovation style. Supplier has to decide how much effort put on contract: effort is assumed as nonobservable then it cannot be constrained contractually. We model the R&D process like a staged one, which allows for both an early contract and a late one. The overall committed effort depends on the alliance timing: earlier contracts will ask for a greater cumulated effort although they offer risk-sharing opportunity. On the other hand, later contracts see supplier with a stronger ex-ante bargaining power position, due to shorter (and then less risky) contract length and experience…
How firms are using networking decisions to achieve strategic objectives: Building theories from four case studies
2011
Many research studies in OM literature have investigated how different kinds of focal firm decisions regarding business vertical relationships (i.e. with both suppliers and buyers) can positively affect firm’s operations performance and thus improve its competitive position. In this paper we extend this genre of study by also considering business horizontal relationships (i.e with competitors and firms that own complementary capabilities) and by considering the impact of business relationships not only on focal firm’s operations performance but also on its resources endowment. We present four cases that describe what are the strategic manager intents (in term of operations performance and r…
The reconciliation process of market requirements and operations resources – an empirical view
2018
Firms are confronted with the challenge of designing strategy processes, which guide decision-making in a way that leads to high and sustainable performance. The purpose of this paper is to address this challenge, by delivering empirical insights on Slack & Lewis’ concept of reconciliation in Operations Strategy from a process point-of-view. We argue that while this concept roots in the alignment literature of Operations Strategy it has not yet been subject to detailed and empirical research. We discuss the development of a survey that examines if and how reconciliation is carried out in companies and how this affects operations performance.
A framework for public purchasing under a decentralized organization: an empirical study in the healthcare sector in Italy
2009
More and more public companies are showing interest in how no conventional purchasing strategies, such as purchasing group solutions, may improve efficiency in purchasing activities by providing consistent saving on public organization budgets. This issue is essential for the healthcare sector, whose public spending is still increasing and represents a significant part of the GNP of many European countries. In this paper, different purchasing strategies have been addressed; more specifically, the main objective is to formalize a framework supporting purchasing strategy formulation, and operazionalize it through an empirical application to the Sicilian Region healthcare industry.
