[Radiomics and artificial intelligence: new frontiers in medicine.]
2020
Radiomics is a new frontier of medicine based on the extraction of quantitative data from radiological images which can not be seen by radiologist's naked eye and on the use of these data for the creation of clinical decision support systems. The long-term goal of radiomics is to improve the non-invasive diagnosis of focal and diffuse diseases of different organs by understanding links between extracted quantitative imaging data and the underlying molecular and pathological characteristics of lesions. In the last decade, several studies have highlighted the enormous potential of radiomics in both tumoral and non-tumoral diseases of many organs and systems including brain, lung, breast, gast…
MRgFUS Uterine Fibroids treatments in Sicily: Preliminary Results and comparison of a Semi-Automatic and manual contouring
2013
Background: Traditional surgery for uterine fibroids treatments (e.g. myomectomy, hysterectomy) offers very invasive therapeutic approaches, which not always preserve reproductive potential of the woman. MRgFUS (MR guided Focused UltraSound) is a new and non-invasive technique for uterine fibroids treatment, not requiring hospitalization and recovery time [1]. On June 2011 and July 2012 the first treatments were started at HSR-Giglio Hospital in Cefalù and at University Hospital (DIBIMEF) in Palermo. An initial assessment of MRgFUS treatment was made by computing the thermally-ablated volume of uterine fibroid. This volume was evaluated considering the NPV (Non Perfused Volume) on a post-t…
360° Tracking Using a Virtual PTZ Camera
2017
Object tracking using still or PTZ cameras is a hard task for large spaces and needs several devices to completely cover the area or to track multiple subjects. The introduction of \(360^{\circ }\) camera technology offers a complete view of the scene in a single image and can be useful to reduce the number of devices needed in the tracking problem. In this paper we present a framework using \(360^{\circ }\) cameras to simulate an unlimited number of PTZ cameras and to be used for tracking. The proposed method to track a single target process an equirectangular view of the scene and obtains a model of the moving object in the image plane. The target is tracked analyzing the next frame of th…
Automatic concept maps generation in support of educational processes
2014
A VLE is a system where three main actors can be devised: the teacher in the role of instructional designer, the tutor, and the stu- dent. Instructional designers need easy interaction for specifying the course domain structure to the system, and for controlling how well the learning materials agree to such a structure. Tutors need tools for having a holistic perception of the evolution of single students and/or groups in the VLE during the learning process. Finally, students need self regulation in terms of controlling their learning rate, reflect on their learning strategies, and comparing with other people in the class. In this work we claim that sharing an implicit representation of the…
Intelligent Agents supporting user interactions within self regulated learning processes
2010
The paper focuses on the main advantages in the defnition and utilization of an open and modular e-learning software platform to support highly cognitive tasks performed by the main actors of the learning process. We present in detail the integration inside the platform of two intelligent agents devoted to talking with the student and to retrieving new information sources on the Web. The process is triggered as a reply to the system’s perception that the student feels discontented with the presented contents. The architecture is detailed, and some conclusions about the growth of the platform’s overall performance are expressed.
Automatic Volumetric Liver Segmentation Using Texture Based Region Growing
2010
In this paper an automatic texture based volumetric region growing method for liver segmentation is proposed. 3D seeded region growing is based on texture features with the automatic selection of the seed voxel inside the liver organ and the automatic threshold value computation for the region growing stop condition. Co-occurrence 3D texture features are extracted from CT abdominal volumes and the seeded region growing algorithm is based on statistics in the features space. Each CT volume is composed by 230 slices, having 512 x 512 pixels as spatial resolution, and 12-bit gray level resolution. In this initial feasible study, 5 healthy volunteer acquisitions has been used. Tests have been p…
Lavoro e retribuzione nel Terzo Settore: appunti e disappunti
2019
