Household skills and low wages
2008
Originally published in the journal Journal of Population Economics, Springer http://www.springerlink.com/content/100520/ Household skills provide job skills when tasks in jobs and household production are similar and jobs produce substitutes for home-made services. Opportunity costs of higher education are foregone earnings during schooling and foregone household production while studying and later in life. I show that individuals in jobs requiring household skills accept lower wage rates than traditional human capital theory predicts, and that individuals with low household skills tend to enter higher education. According to these results, declining household skills may have contributed t…

2021
Publisher Copyright: © 2021, University of Ljubljana. All rights reserved. Although different forms of English-medium instruction (EMI) are being recognised, the different ways in which EMI can impact the pedagogical activities and expertise of higher education educators have received less attention. Using face-to-face and written interviews with nine teacher educators at a Finnish university, this study examines the most important aspects teacher educators perceive in their work through EMI and how these aspects connect to the understanding of their professional identity. The study is theoretically premised on the interconnected concepts of pedagogical doing, pedagogical being, pedagogical…
Promoting youth entrepreneurship and employability through non-formal and informal learning: the Latvia case
2019
This paper presents some results of the research on ‘Adult education resources to reduce youth unemployment’, which is a part of the project ‘Implementation of the European agenda for adult learning’. The research applies a mixed-method approach (quantitative and qualitative data analysis). The purpose of the paper is to identify the most/least-efficient non-formal and informal learning methods, forms, and initiatives to promote youth entrepreneurship and employability in Latvia as well as to show the relationship between the profile of young adults and their opinion on these methods, forms, and initiatives. The findings show that the young adults stressed the importance of cooperation with…
The role of informal learning in adults' literacy proficiency
2021
This study used the Programme for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) dataset to examine informal literacy learning’s effects on adults’ literacy proficiency. Also, the factors associated with informal literacy learning at and outside of work were studied. The study participants were Nordic adults aged 35–65 years. The statistical method was regression analysis, and the results indicate that informal literacy activities at work are associated primarily with occupation, and informal literacy activities outside of work with education, parents’ education and gender. Initial education, occupation, language background and age exerted the strongest estimated associations with r…

2017
Masteroppgave pedagogikk PED511 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 Background and purpose of the project The purpose of this study has been to investigate whether structural factors in kindergarten can affect gender equality in the children's group. Status reports from the kindergarten field show that gender equality is proving challenging in practiceand my research aims to look into what may be the reasons for this. Looking at the kindergarten structure, specifically time and space, I wanted to look at the role of time frames and different rooms in the gender equality issue. My research question is: What significance can the kindergarten's structural form have for the implementation of gender eq…
The EU as a global actor Is the EU diffusing norms in third countries through NGOs?
2015
Master thesis Public Policy and Management- University of Agder, 2015 The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the role of the European Union as a global actor and as promoter of gender equality in third countries. The thesis consists of a case study of the relation between the EU and a Mexican NGO, where I am trying to determine its effect on the formulation of public policies protecting women’s rights. To analyze the case study I benefit from the role theory, normative power and interregionalism. The findings of the study suggest that the EU is employing instruments such as political dialogue together with the principle of conditionality in order to spread ideas, norms and values. Furthe…
Flerkulturelle kvinner i arbeidslivet
2015
2021
Master's thesis in Sociology and social work (ME524) This thesis mainly centers around associate professors and what they express to be their core personal values with respect to work and life, in general, where these values are discussed in a gender perspective. Fewer women, than men, reach professorship at universities, and men on average also achieve this academic goal faster than women. The relationship between this gender imbalance and the personal values is the focal point of the discussion. The empirical evidence is based on five interviews with three female, and two male associate professors. Through qualitative methods and thematic analysis, the personal values such as teaching/sup…
