Correlation of Vertebral Absolute Axial Rotations in CAD 3D Models of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Non-Invasively Diagnosed
2019
This paper presents preliminary results on non-invasive optical diagnosis of patient with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with recently developed tool ScolioSIM. This tool generates intrinsic and extrinsic indicators of the spinal deformity and 3D CAD (Computer-aided Design) deformity model based only on a digitalized dorsal surface of the examined patient. Our primary focus in this paper are absolute axial rotations (AAR) of each vertebra in AIS patients and their correlations. Clinical relevance of this research is high, as we intend to avoid traditional methods which rely on highly complicated reading and measuring of AARs on planar x-ray films, as these methods involve ionizing ra…
Archaeometric characterization and 3D survey: new perspectives for monitoring and valorization of Morgantina silver Treasure (Sicily)
2015
The Morgantina silver Treasure belonging to the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Aidone (Sicily) were involved in a 3D survey and diagnostics campaign for monitoring over time of the finds, in anticipation of their temporary transfer to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, for a period of four years. According to a multidisciplinary approach, it has been developed a scientific and methodological protocol based on non-invasive techniques to achieve a complete and integrated knowledge of the precious items, of their conservation state and increasing their valorisation. All acquired data, i.e. 3D models, UV fluorescence and X-Ray images and chemical information, will be made …

A "laboratory" open air in the urban landscape of Palermo
2012
The study intends to make new contributions to knowledge of a interesting "laboratory" in the open air in the urban landscape of Palermo, a cultural and scientific heritage in which architecture, art and decoration coexist in an experiment of collective synergies. The Botanical Garden C enter, with its ten acres of land appears, still, a fervent creative process between artifice and nature, the expression of a specific historical and cultural climate in which expectations converged of a intellectual, scientific and institutional fervor. The academic institution, founded in 1789 with the intention of cultivating useful plants to the arts, crafts and medicine, contributed to the spread of tro…
AR to Rediscover Heritage: the Case Study of Salerno Defense System
2022
Recognizing and transmitting the uniqueness and identity of one’s territory represents fundamental step to guarantee its sustainability, protection and valorisation. Of particular importance, moreover, is the issues of the lesser-known heritage of great value but which, unfortunately, in some cases is still little known and often in a state of neglect. However, the diffusion of new technology and the great development of digitization positively contribute to the accessibility and visibility of these patrimonies, increasing the knowledge and the dissemination. This contribution focuses on one of the towers of the coastal defence system, a perfect example of a lesser-known architecture of gre…
Rappresentazioni tattili
2020
Contour map of the top of the regional geothermal reservoir of Sicily (Italy).
2015
An integrated review of existing geological and geophysical data – partly acquired during oil and gas exploration – combined with new data provided by deep geothermal studies of selected key areas, was used for the 3D modeling and mapping of the top of the geothermal reservoir developed at a regional scale in Sicily (Central Mediterranean). The resulting 1:500,000 scale map covers the area of the whole Sicily (about 25,700 km2) and is devoted to represent the main input for both the thermal modeling and the evaluation of geothermal potential at a regional scale. As the map indicates the distribution at depth of a likely target for geothermal drilling, it can be also used as a rough indicato…
The use of very high resolution images for studying Posidonia oceanica reefs
2020
Posidonia oceanica is an endemic Mediterranean seagrass that forms wide and dense meadows from the surface up to about 40 m depth. This species can develop a biogenic structure called matte, a typical terraced formation built up by itself, consisting of intertwined rhizomes, roots and sediment, which may allow shoots to reach the sea surface forming reefs (récif barrière), considered natural monuments. Posidonia oceanica reefs are particularly exposed to the ongoing increase in temperature and in storm frequency and intensity due to climate change, with negative repercussions on their conservation. Much more attention must be paid to the implementation of monitoring tools able to detect ear…
Una scorsa all’Orto Botanico di Palermo
2013
On the base of a valuable documentation of project drawings, sketches and old survey, the Author proposes graphic studies aimed to critically revisit all neoclassical buildings of the Gymnasium that it is it possible to see at the Botanical Garden of Palermo. The charming open-air laboratory that the Botanical Garden of Palermo offers to visitors and experts, in the urban landscape of Palermo, natural and architectural heritage shows how Architecture, Art and Decoration coexist in a synergistic experiment.
Characterization of a novel three-dimensional outgrowth model of human bronchial mucosa
2011
Recently it has been hypothesized that a reactivation of the epithelial-mesenchymal trophic unit (EMTU) of the respiratory mucosa, caused by extensive epithelial damage, may be responsible for the pathogenesis of asthma. However, most research on this subject so far has been limited by the unavailability of in vitro models correctly mimicking the three-dimensional architecture of the properly differentiated human bronchial mucosa. For this reason, we have developed a novel 3D outgrowth model, obtained from bronchial biopsies and composed of both human bronchial epithelial cells (goblet and columnar cells) and fibroblasts with their basement membrane. Here we present the preliminary data obt…
