The Sicilian Fold and Thrust belt (SFTB) is a structurally complex area where along-strike variations of structural styles, shortening amounts, exhumation rates and amounts of syn-tectonic sedimentation frequently occur. Moreover strong differential clockwise rotations around vertical axes affected the different tectonic units during their emplacement. This complexity, coupled with debatable or incomplete subsurface dataset (e.g., available 2D onshore seismic lines) allowed previous authors to propose different interpretations for the tectonic evolution of the SFTB since Cenozoic time. As part of activities of the “Inside the Glaciers” project, managed by an Italian team of speleologists and geologists with the purpose of studying several ice-caves in Europe and South America, a research campaign was recently carried out in Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy). This volcano is the highest active in Europe and hosts more than 200 caves including Grotta del Gelo (Ice Cave) which is located on the Northern flank of Mount Etna at an altitude of about 2040 m a.s.l. This cave was formed during the Etna’s long and most destructive eruption dated from 1614 to 1624 and is one of the most famous because it hosts a small glacier, maybe the southernmost of the Northern hemisphere. This paper presents the synthesis of research about the ICT solution for cultural heritage through the innovative technology of representation and survey. One objective was to identify a method of processing data for knowledge, dissemination and preservation of the asset. Historical analysis, surveying, photogrammetry and laser scanner, the processing of survey data and modelling are all focused to the same final purpose. The methodology developed for this application framework becomes adoptable in General for Cultural Property, which become in turn the protagonists of 3D WebGIS.

Virtual reality is proving to be an interesting tool for the visualization of 3d models developed for urban planning. It allows not only interactive visualization, but also the possibility of inserting analogical and informative contents. The case study relates to the development of a 3D model viewable in virtual reality of the Port of Palermo area, of great urban, historical and logistical interest. The system allows the visualization of its current state, historical emergencies and future developments, as well as the comparison between existing services and those planned in the reconfiguration project.

The contribution aims to conjecturally reconstruct and analyze the unrealized project by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda regarding the “Galleria Oretea” for Palermo. It is an urban project of considerable size and impact, which should have provided the city of Palermo, in the old town, with a gallery in the style of the Parisian “passages”, inspired by the contemporary creations of Milan and Naples.
