2-methylthiazolidine and 4-ethylguaiacol, male sex pheromone components of the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea (Dictyoptera, Bladeridae) : A reinvestigat…

1992

49 ref.; International audience; In Nauphoeta cinerea, male calling behavior is associated with sex pheromone release by the sternal glands. The male pheromone that attracts females from a distance is a mixture of 2-methylthiazolidine and 4-ethylguaiacol. It is active at very low concentrations, 0.05 and 0.01 ng, respectively. Two other compounds, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone and 2-methyl-2thiazoline, act at close range, keeping the female in the vicinity of the male. The function of the volatile pheromone and those of previously described contact pheromones are discussed in regard to their possible involvement in the establishment of male dominant-subordinate relationships.

Sorption of 4-ethylphenol and 4-ethylguaiacol by suberin from cork

2015

International audience; Cork shows an active role in the sorption of volatile phenols from wine. The sorption properties of 4-ethylphenol and 4-ethylguaiacol phenols in hydro-alcoholic medium placed in contact with suberin extracted from cork were especially investigated. To that purpose, suberin was immersed in model wine solutions containing several concentrations of each phenol and the amount of the compound remaining in the liquid phase was determined by SPME-GC-MS. Sorption isotherms of 4-ethylguaiacol and 4-ethylphenol by suberin followed the Henry's model. The solid/liquid partition coefficients (KSL) between the suberin and the model wine were also determined for several other volat…

Sorption of wine volatile phenols by yeast lees

2005

The capacity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast lees to sorb 4-ethylguaiacol and 4-ethylphenol was investigated in a synthetic medium and in wine. Active dried yeast was more effective when volatile phenols were diluted in red wine. Partition coefficients between wine model solution and wine yeast lees were determined and compared with those measured for dried active yeast. They showed a larger affinity of volatile phenols for wine yeast lees than for dried active yeast. The effect of yeast lees on volatile phenol sorption was sensitive to yeast autolysis level and to physicochemical parameters, such as ethanol content, temperature and pH. These results could be applied in the technology of …

Seducin, male sex pheromone of the cockroachNauphoeta cinerea: Isolation, identification, and bioassay.

1990

The male sex pheromone of the cockroachNauphoeta cinerea was isolated from adult sternal glands and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. This pheromone, which attracts females from a distance, is a multicomponent blend. It is composed principally of three compounds: 3-hydroxy-2-butanone (acetoin), 2-methylthiazolidine, and 4-ethyl-2-meth-oxyphenol. A mixture of synthetic compounds in a ratio of 4∶4∶1 (2700 ng) elicits maximal response and short latency of response by receptive females, similar to that induced by male sternal gland extracts. Tested separately, each compound induces a positive response, but the moving times spent by females are generally longer than with the mi…
