Hydroponics need water of good quality to prepare a balanced nutrient solution that could allow plants to reach their maximum yield potential. The rising difficulties in finding water with good quality have led to the compelling necessity of identifying sustainable ways to use saline water, limiting its negative effect on crop yield and quality. Seasonal changes in starch content in pistachio organs as related to crop load

The alternate bearing in pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) results from inflorescence buds abscission differentiated on current season growth during the year of heavy crop. Inflorescence bud drop has been directly correlated with the presence of fruits on 1-year shoot, and in particular with the kernel grow that acts as the major sink of nutrients. Experimental evidences suggest the involvement of competition between reproductive organs for the available resources. Fruit gels were prepared containing four levels (20, 40, 60 and 80%) of strawberry pulp, four levels (0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1.1 %) of hydrocolloids (kappa-carrageenan plus locust bean gum, 1:1) and two levels (0, 10%) of sucrose. Their mechanical properties were analyzed by compression (failure stress and failure strain) and by texture profile analysis, TPA (hardness, cohesiveness, springiness, adhesive ness, and chewiness). Addition of hydrocolloids produced expected increases in both stress and strain at failure. Sucrose increased failure stress but did not alter strain values. Is it advantageous for Atlantic salmon to be triploid at lower temperatures?

Marine organisms living at low temperatures tend to have larger genomes and larger cells which suggest that these traits can be beneficial in colder environments. In fish, triploidy (three complete sets of chromosomes) can be induced experimentally following fertilization, which provides a model system to investigate the hypothesis that larger cells and genomes offers a physiological advantage at low temperatures. Decoupling of light intensity effects on the growth and development of C3 and C4 weed species through sucrose supplementation

Aroma Volatility from Aqueous Sucrose Solutions at Low and Subzero Temperatures

International audience; The gas-liquid partition coefficients of ethyl acetate and ethyl hexanoate have been measured in water and aqueous sucrose solutions from 25 to -10 degrees C by dynamic headspace. Experiments were carried out on sucrose solutions at temperatures where no ice formation was possible. Results showed that when sucrose concentration increased, aroma volatility increased except for ethyl hexanoate and in the highest sucrose concentration solution (57.5%). Arbuscular mycorrhiza and fungal root endophytes of weeds in an altitudinal gradient in the Pamir Alai Mountains of Central Asia

Arbuscular mycorrhiza and fungal root endophytes of three weeds, Galium tricornutum, Lycopsis orientalis and Scandix pecten-veneris, were studied in an altitudinal gradient of the Pamir Alai Mountains. Colonisation by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) was found in all species. Only in the case of G. tricornutum was there a rise in mycorrhizal parameters values found for the medium altitude range. Similar tendencies were observed in the case of the AMF colonisation potential assessment. This suggests that plant species' identity, dependency on symbiosis and interactions with soil properties determine root colonisation and the abundance of AMF in soils at the elevations in question.
