The effect of variation in berry size on berry composition was studied in irrigated Syrah/R99 grapevines, located in a temperate area of South Africa. Berries from 45 clusters, sampled from both sides of the canopy (east and west), were weighed to create four categories: 1. less or equal to 1.5 g; 2. between 1.51 g and 2.00 g; 3. between 2.01 g and 2.50 g; 4. more than 2.50 g. Summary The foliar penetration of four alkyl oleates (methyl to butyl) and their influence on the penetration of phenmedipham and quizalofop-P-ethyl was studied in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), cleavers (Galium aparine L.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.). Loss of alkyl oleates from glass and plant surfaces was inversely related to the length of the alkyl chains and was assumed to be due to volatilization. All four alkyl oleates after application alone, readily penetrated into pea and barley leaves but much less into G. aparine. A method is described that allows the development of an empirical approach to quantify synergistic interactions and their variations with shear rate. The approach is based on the definition of a viscous synergism index, Iv. The method is applied to xanthan-locust bean gum gels, and an equation is developed for relating the synergism index to shear rate, γ, and the locust bean gum/xanthan gum concentration ratio, z. The quality of the proteins can be modified as a consequence of a set of reactions, the most important of which are the interactions between protein and carbohydrates, also known as Maillard reactions. These reactions can also occur when the storage conditions of moisture and temperature are unfavorable. The role of oils in herbicide treatments is reviewed, both in terms of their own intrinsic activity and of their enhancement of the performance of other herbicides. The phytotoxicity of oils can be related to their physical properties. Their efficacy as adjuvants can vary with the plant /pesticide combination involved, and differences may also be observed between oils of mineral and vegetable origin.
