Tenth grade pupils engagement with the use of brackets in algebra : a case study in a school in Albania
2012
Masteroppgave i matematikkdidaktikk- Universitetet i Agder, 2012 Since algebra is considered as a language, it has its syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. In the third linguistic level (pragmatics) stand the relations between the elements of language and the users. Since brackets are elements of algebra language they have their syntax, which involves some rules that lead transformations of algebraic expressions even with brackets; and brackets have their semantic aspect, which is related to tackling of algebraic expressions into brackets such as mathematical objects. On the other side, the consideration of the syntactic aspect of algebraic expressions leads to instrumental understanding of t…
Tidlig algebra : algebraisk tenkemåte og arbeidsmåter i en tredjeklasse- en casestudie
2011
Masteroppgave i matematikkdidaktikk- Universitetet i Agder 2011 The main theme for this thesis is early algebra. The focus is on teaching approaches and how these operate during the activities used in a third grade mathematics classroom. Particular to this classroom is the absence of textbooks, and the use of concrete manipulables. The terms early algebra and algebraic reasoning are central, and I aim to give an overview of the development of, and the background for, these terms. Further I go into arithmetic and numeral reasoning as an entry point into early algebra, and also give an in-depth description of two research articles. Confluent pedagogy and the KUL-LCM project are also part of t…
The introduction of algebra : comparative studies of textbooks in Finland, Norway, Sweden and USA
2012
Masteroppgave i matematikkdidaktikk- Universitetet i Agder, 2012 This master thesis is a comparative analysis of textbooks from four different countries, Finland, Norway, Sweden and USA (California), concerning the introduction of algebra. The topic for this research was inspired and initiated in connection with the international project VIDEOMAT, which I have been involved with since its planning phase. Following the design of this project, two mathematics textbooks of two consecutive grades from the four different countries have been analyzed. The focus in these has been the 60 first tasks presented in the algebraic chapters. The review of literature includes a look at the origins of alge…
Meningsfylte matematikkoppgaver? En casestudie fra ungdomsskoleelevers aktiviteter knyttet til algebra på en bedrift.
2015
Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk- Universitetet i Agder, 2015 "Meaningful mathematics tasks?" is a case study related to 9th grade in Norwegian lower secondary school that visited Returkraft, an energy recovery facility in Kristiansand. During a full day on this enterprise, they worked with tasks that were designed in connection with this study. ”Algebra på Returkraftskolen” is based on competence goals for functions and includes two student booklets, one for study preparation at school and the other for enterprise visit. The students were guided around Returkraft, then worked in group with tasks from business context and finally summary in plenary. Based on this teaching program, I have a…
To læreverks presentasjon av algebra på 8. trinn En analyse og sammenligning
2015
Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk- Universitetet i Agder, 2015 The aim of this study was to analyze how two textbooks and associated material present algebra in eighth grade, and whether they are focusing on facilitating instrumental understanding or relational understanding. Skemp’s (1976) theory on instrumental and relational understanding played an important role in this work. The textbooks I chose to analyze and compare were Grunntall 8 and Faktor 8. Additionally I wanted to study how two teachers used the textbooks. I did this because I wanted to know how they were used in the classroom. The methods used in this study were content analyses of the textbooks, observations of the two teac…
Observation of a class of disturbance in time series expansion for fractional order systems
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/874943 Open Access This paper is concerned with the problem of designing disturbance observer for fractional order systems, of which the disturbance is in time series expansion. The stability of a special observer with the selected nonlinear weighted function and transient dynamics function is rigorously analyzed for slowly varying disturbance. In addition, the result is also extended to estimate slope forms disturbance and higher order disturbance of fractional order systems. The efficacy of the proposed method is validated through numerical ex…
Bounded approximation properties via integral and nuclear operators
2010
Published version of an article in the journal:Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society. Also available from the publisher, Open Access Let X be a Banach space and let A be a Banach operator ideal. We say that X has the lambda-bounded approximation property for A (lambda-BAP for A) if for every Banach space Y and every operator T is an element of A(X, Y), there exists a net (S-alpha) of finite rank operators on X such that S-alpha -> I-X uniformly on compact subsets of X and lim(alpha) sup parallel to TS alpha parallel to(A)<=lambda parallel to T parallel to(A). We prove that the (classical) lambda-BAP is precisely the lambda-BAP for the ideal I of integral operators, or equivalentl…
Fuzzy Investment Portfolio Selection Models Based on Interval Analysis Approach
2012
Published version of an article from the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher:http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/628295 This paper employs fuzzy set theory to solve the unintuitive problem of the Markowitz mean-variance (MV) portfolio model and extend it to a fuzzy investment portfolio selection model. Our model establishes intervals for expected returns and risk preference, which can take into account investors' different investment appetite and thus can find the optimal resolution for each interval. In the empirical part, we test this model in Chinese stocks investment and find that this model can fulfill different kinds of investors' objectives. Fi…
BIBO Stability Analysis for Delay Switched Systems with Nonlinear Perturbation
2013
Published version of a paper from the journal:Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from Hindawi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/738653 The problem of bounded-input bounded-output ( BIBO) stability is investigated for a class of delay switched systems with mixed time-varying discrete and constant neutral delays and nonlinear perturbation. Based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional theory, new BIBO stabilization criteria are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities. The numerical simulation is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the results obtained in the paper.
